Houston Carpet Cleaning & Water Damage

Water Damage: Houston

Carpet water damage. It can happen to anyone. Even on a commercial property. If there is water in your carpets, and it's not properly treated and extracted in a timely manner, it can end up costing you a lot more than it should.

Side note: Be sure to call a plumber to stop the source of the water from flooding your home.

In this blog I'll write a few things you should know after water has introduced itself to your carpets. I will also tell you how you can avoid mold, bacteria, or just replacing the carpet all together by hiring a Houston carpet cleaning company to extract the compromised water.

Water on your carpets not only makes your carpets look bad, it can also present health problems that can lead to serious illness if not properly treated.

Sanitary Water

If any kind of unavoidable water damage is to occur in your home or business, hopefully the water is sanitary water. Sanitary water is water that has been filtered and purified. This kind of water usually comes from things like sinks, bathtubs or water hoses. This is the type of water Houston carpet cleaning companies use to clean with. Although it can be a pain, there is an upside to sanitary water invading your home. Sanitary water isn't harmful. Unless you leave it in your carpets for weeks, then you risk mold & bacteria growing in your carpet.

Unsanitary water

Of course you can probably guess where this kind of water comes from. Unsanitary water can come from sources like over flowing toilets, drainage ditches, rain water or other foul places that could be filled with contaminants. Now if properly treated within 12-24 hours, any Houston carpet cleaning company would do their best to extract as much out as possible.

What to do next?

Getting the water out of your carpets isn't even the bare minimum of restoring your carpets to their former glory. If you pay someone to simply extract it and leave, then you must realize that bacteria and other contaminants are still lurking deep below your carpets. Some Houston TX carpet cleaning companies won't charge you extra to steam clean when the water has been extracted, but most will. This is the most important step to restoring your carpets as the hot steam and chemicals eliminates the bacteria. Expect your carpet to be damp. After the carpet cleaner is done, be sure to place fans aiming at the wet areas. Mind you, being careful to keep all electric cords away from any wet areas. Have you ever taken clothes out of the washer and hung it up to dry? Same concept!

Sometimes it can't be helped

Sometimes, but very rarely, no matter what steps you take to avoid having your carpets replaced, it can't be helped. When damage such as raw sewage occurs, it is almost always recommended to have your carpets replaced for you and your family's health. (The smell is awful too.) You can still contact your local Houston carpet cleaning company or water restoration service if you are unsure if your carpet is salvageable or not.

A few things you can do while waiting for water extractors

Read a book, write an article, play a board game, if your toilet is still over flowing call a plumber, paint a picture.
