How to Ensure A Successful Coach Client Relationship

Coaching has grown in popularity over the last 15 years and there are many people who advertise as coaches from Life Coaches, Personal and Performance Coaches, Confidence Coaches, Career Coaches, Executive Coaches, Business Coaches, Fitness Coaches ... and so on. If you’re looking for a coach it can be a challenge to know where to start. Deciding on the type of coach you want to work with is obviously the first step, but then it’s really important that you find a coach that you feel confident to work with. Having a successful coach client relationship will be one of the keys to you making progress in the area of your life that you want to explore in coaching.

So what are the things you should be looking for in a successful coach client relationship?

Understanding the different roles

Before a coaching relationship starts the coach should be making it very clear to you the client what you can expect from them as a coach and what they will expect from you as a client. It’s important that you hold this conversation and raise any questions that you might have.

Having confidentiality and trust

It goes without saying that anything you say you would expect to be confidential. Clearly if you’re working closely with a coach you want to be able to trust them. However, every coach will make it clear from the beginning that there are exceptions to this which involves anything criminal or where you or someone else might be in danger.

Good rapport between coach and client

It’s really important that there is good rapport between you and your coach. You want to be able to work with someone who you’re comfortable with, even when they are challenging you. If you find yourself holding back because you feel your coach is critical of you or is laughing at you rather than with you, then they are clearly not the coach for you. If you don’t have rapport with your coach it is unlikely to be a successful relationship.

Commitment from client

If you’ve decided that you want some coaching, it’s important that you’re committed to working at it. However good a coach is, they can’t make any changes for you. That’s entirely up to you. Some client coach relationships break down simply because the client isn’t committed enough to take action and make changes. Don’t let that happen to you.

Commitment from the coach

Coaches should always be professional and be prepared for each session. They should be able to summarise the previous session, help you move on when stuck. Many have a substantial toolkit of resources that they use when appropriate for clients. Only work with a coach who is committed to your success.

These are five issues that you need to be aware of which will help ensure a successful coach client relationship. Having the right relationship will help you as the client to make changes and find the success you want.
