Hi everyone, Mi name is Alex, I´m 30 years old and I know a thing or two about losing and getting a job.
I was fired from my job last year, and as all of you who have been in the same situation have experienced, it led to a great deal of worries ups and downs, financial instability and depression in general.
The reason I created this site was to help people in the same situation because I know how frustrating it can be to be without a job, mostly at an age where you’re supposed to rise financially and gather capital. To help others I’m going to share my personal experiences, what I went through, what I felt, my whole process and how I overcame the situation.
I also ask that if I ever say anything that captures your interest, that you get involved within my site. I love to talk about this topic and if you have anything interesting that you want to share or any opinions of any of the content I have created on my site, please do speak up. I love feedback in every form.
When you get fired and are in the process of getting a job, it is almost therapeutic to share your experiences and hear that you are not alone, and that many others have been to the same situation. So I encourage you to share your own experiences and to let me know if any of my thoughts here helps you.
I always say that I wish someone would have advised me earlier in this process so that I wouldn’t had to learn it the hard way. So if you read this I think your lucky to be able to get this advice and shorten the time between being unemployed up to getting a job.
Advice # 1
Build yourself a great resume
Your resume is going to be your selling document to the hiring manager. It has to be a concise document where you expose all your achievements, and your strengths in order for the hiring manager to read it and say that you are the person that’s been missing in his team to achieve his goals.
In this document you should only write what you consider relevant information for the hiring manager to take the decision to hire you. Do not extend yourself writing you interests or personal believes of who you are. This document should reveal your most relevant functions in each of your past jobs and the results you have obtained in them. Your resume must have numbers (ej. how you managed to increase the company’s sales by X% or how you increased your client database by X%) Hiring managers an HHRR people love to see numbers and real achievements in your resume, and this is a proof point that you were efficient doing your job.
Advice # 2
Cover letter
This is maybe an extension of the first advice but is as important as anything. In writing your resume, you should always write a good cover letter. This is basically an executive summary of what have you done professionally. It includes your years of work experience, in what industries have you worked in, what is your profession, your level of education and finally your capabilities or expertise or the things you are good at and have experience in.
After you have finished your resume, a good word of advice would be to ask for a friend who works in HHRR or in a HeadHunting firm to review it. They know more about these things than you do.
Advice # 3
Getting an interview
The first step to getting a job fast is getting as much interviews as you can. The more you get, the more chances you have to getting hired. This is one of the most important advices I’m going to give you: Do not spend the entire time applying online. Although it is one of the strategies you might want to do in finding a job, you should dedicate only very few time doing so. You have to realize that thousands of candidates apply online and even if you are a great candidate with a great resume, chances are that your resume might not even be read because of the pile of resumes that a company receives online. So do not dedicate a very much deal of time doing so.
Advice # 4
Use Linked In instead
You have to realize the power of linked in whether you like it or not. This social network is a very powerful tool in getting interviews. When I was out of job I spent 5 months applying online and I got 2 interviews in total. When I discovered and started to use linked in, I got 10 interviews in 2 months. What you want to do is look for hiring managers. When I say hiring managers I refer to the people with the power to hire you. This person has the power making decision to give you the job. So look for companies you would like to work in and filter your search by managers in order to add them to your contacts. After they have accepted you, write them a private message explaining who you are, why are you contacting them and how you would like to participate in a job selection process in their company.
Advice # 5
Try to avoid HHRR and don’t spend too much time with headhunters
As I said before, look for hiring managers that have the power and decision ability to hire you. If you contact HHRR people or headhunters, they will only act as an obstacle between you and the hiring manager. In other words, as intermediaries ant it not only will slow the whole process but reject you. What I mean by this is that these people get briefed by the hiring manager on what kind of profile he what’s candidates to have. If you don’t fulfill this profile perfectly and entirely, they may reject you immediately.
