Coffee/health And Fitness

The focus on my articles are towards Nutrition, health, and fitness. I thought that I would like to write about coffee. Coffee is so popular with the world. People who work the night shift anywhere will generally count on their coffee or caffeine beverage to help them through their night at work. I just don't know if nurses or doctors could make it all night without their coffee to help keep them awake and alert. How many of us want to go out for a 'cup of coffee'? Most of us cannot seem to get on the right foot in the morning without that first cup of coffee.

Coffee is so popular at meal time, snack time and by itself. You name it and coffee it all around us at just about anytime of the day or night. And, all those special flavors, Michigan Cherry coffee, Carmel coffee, Chocolate coffee, Toffee Coffee, the list is endless of mouth drooling coffee flavors, not to mention the Lattes, Expressos, and etc.

What is this special beverage? What is really in coffee? Does anyone really care?

I researched coffee and caffeine and it opened my eyes. However, will I stop drinking coffee? No. I am a BIG coffee drinker. Will I at least cut down on my coffee consumption? Um...No!! I enjoy my coffee too much. I did find this information very informative, and thought that it may also be of some interest to you.

Coffee is a brewed drink. It originates from roasted seeds or coffee beans. There are well over 50 countries that grow coffee trees. And, as I mentioned earlier coffee is one of the most-consumed beverages, not only in the United States, but the world.

A lot of us rely on coffee if we are working the night shift. Being from the medical profession, I know that nurses rely on coffee during the night and doctors rely of coffee to get them through the grueling medical school hours.

In the medical profession we have a certain classification of drugs that when ordered for patients many times the primary doctor will refer the patient to a psychiatrist to over see the type of medication, and dosage. Why? Because there are a few classes of drugs that the primary doctors generally do not want to perscribe unless it is done through a doctor who has a special experise with these drugs.

The psychiatrist will watch for any side effects and, if this particular medication is helping the patient. One group of medications that the specialist will watch is called Psychoactive medications. The state will also check these drugs. I am in Michigan, so when a patient is perscribed any of these medications the information is sent to the State of Michigan and is flagged. This is especially true in Long Term Care Facilities. If these drugs are not used in the right way or they feel that the patient does not need them then they will get quickly involved. So, in the medical profession psychoactive drugs given to patients are closely scrutinized by the doctor and the State.

The Caffeine in coffee belongs to a group of chemicals called alkaloids. alkaloids are often used as medicines or recreational drugs. Caffeine is considered a psychoactive substanace. It is a stimulant that works on the central nervous system. It keeps us from becoming drowsy and keeps us alert. This psychoactive substance needs no monitoring and no one needs a prescription to drink it. It is the most sought after legal psychoactive substance we know. And, it does not need any government regulation.

Stop and think about all of our food items that have caffine in them. How about Chocolate? Chocolate is a huge industry. Think about what could happen if the government decided to take caffinee off the market. I don't see this happening because we would be in a bigger mess then we are now.

I have mentioned in several of my articles that it is important for us to drink at least 8, 8 ounce glasses of water per day. Well, let's see.. today I had 4 cups of coffee, therefore I have easily drank 1/2 of the water I need in a day, coffee is made from water. Right? Well yes, this is correct. But, an incorrect assumption, as coffee is considered a diuretic. What I mean is that coffee removes water from our system, therefore there is always the risk for dehydration if certain people drink it and they do not tolerate it well. I still need those 8 glasses of water sometime during the day.

And, I can almost hear all those out there who do not drink coffee and are tea drinkers. Not so quick you tea totters. If your tea is not an herbal tea you are rowing in the same boat at as all of us coffeeholics. I have not research this but I have heard that tea is said to have more caffeine than coffee so you may be rowing the boat a little faster.

Did I hear you say you don't do coffee or tea. You said... you drink soda. Sorry but soda has just as much or even more caffeine than coffee does plus a lot more sugar unless it is diet soda, but, I am going to leave that for another time.

People who regularly drink energy drinks may be consuming a lot of caffeine also. All I can say is continue to read your labels and I urge everyone to know what they are putting into their bodies so that we can have a fighting chance to stay healthy and fit.

Here's to your improved health and fitness, and that next good cup of coffee, tea or bottle of soda.
