History of Coffee

Coffee It's Very Old and Interesting History

Americans really love their coffee. This flavorful brew has been around as far as we know since the fifteenth century, along with coffee shops, or as they we also called coffee houses. These places were gossip spots, places were folks gathered to play chess, socialize and discuss political issues and even listen to music that really hasn't changed after all this time. Through my research I discovered it is thought that it first began as a drink back in Africa people ate the fruit of the tree called "cherry berries". Through time the Dutch brought the plants to the Netherlands to grow in greenhouses as it grew in popularity. Because of the political discussions that were discussed and argued in the coffee houses they were even banned and the houses and the coffee itself taxed.

Coffee Comes To America

The time it was introduced and brought to America is not certain but it is thought to be sometime in the early 1600's and coffee houses starting spreading to cities and towns like Boston, New York as well as smaller townships. Many deals and important politicking discussions were said to be made in coffee houses around America. I don't think that has changed too much who knows what is talked about and what deals are made at your local Starbucks these days as people are in circles around their laptops, I'm sure it's just not a gossip spot. Brazil began to be known as the biggest grower of coffee beans after their largest crop sugar started dropping in price during the eigthteen hundredths and the demand for coffee began to grow. Brazil had the perfect climate to grow the crop although there was competition from Cuba, Haiti and many South American countries.

Coffee Machines

You need a device in order to make this popular drink and the devices have really changed over these many hundreds of years. Basically coffee is made by pouring boiling water over the ground beans that is called "brewing". The first coffe pot I myself remember is my grandmother's old tin pot where she would fill this t white sock looking thing with coffee, fill the pot itself with water and put in on her old gas stove to boil. Oh the aroma was wonderful and somehow she knew when it was just right. My mother had the "percolator" and boy did I think I was so modern when I had my own home and bought myself a Mr. Coffee. Now of course things has really changed and the coffee machines now a days are really varied and expensive you can buy a twenty nine dollar basic coffee maker to a three hundred dollar marvel that makes cappuccino to espresso in minutes. Times sure have changed but the coffee house and shops are still here people still gather there and hopefully they stay around forever.
