How Do You Take Your Coffee?

If you are like many people, you like your morning coffee. How do you like it? Perhaps you put sugar in it. You might season it with spices, such as cinnamon or nutmeg. You might even drink it black. Like you, I also enjoy this tasty beverage.

I started drinking coffee during my undergrad years at Northwestern State University. I roomed with a friend of mine, who sometimes fixed us coffee before we headed out to class. I discovered that I loved it. I then started drinking it with my meals in the school dining hall. I would eat my meal, return my tray to the kitchen, get a cup of coffee, and then sit down at the table to study until it was time for my class. Then, when it was time to go, I grabbed my books, loaded them into my backpack, and left the dining hall. I may have been on my way to Spanish, where I would learn important concepts, such as conjugating Spanish verbs. Alternately, I may have been heading to an English class, where I would learn concepts that would ultimately help me to become a better writer. Wherever I was going, coffee helped to energize me and get me through my day.

The coffee in the dining hall, I discovered, was an acquired taste. I started out drinking that coffee with two sugars. Gradually, I cut back to one sugar. Then, eventually, I got to where I could drink it black. I wanted to be able to drink my coffee black for two reasons. First, there is a history of diabetes in my family. By cutting out sugar wherever I could, I could reduce my risk of getting the disease. Second, I wanted to be able to enjoy the taste of the beverage by itself, with nothing added to it. I wanted to be able to enjoy its bold, rich flavor. I still drink coffee, but today I enjoy it in a number of different ways, other than black.

One way I like it is when it becomes mocha. Mocha is made by adding cocoa to coffee. This beverage can be enjoyed hot or cold. In addition to mocha, there is another delicious and unique way to fix a cup of coffee. Let it get cold, and then add just a splash of a soft drink, such as Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper, to it. Adding the soft drink gives the cold coffee a sweet, fizzy taste. Finally, like many people, I also enjoy adding flavored creamers to my coffee.

Tomorrow morning, get up, and fix your coffee the way you like it. Then, get ready for your day. Prepare for a great day at work--whatever your work might be.
