The number 1 Nespresso compatible pods consumer. Let the race begin!
Studies have shown that the home coffee machine is the most popular kitchen appliance in the last decade. 10 plus years of constant sales growth since the now famous original Nesspresso coffee machine was released. Since Nestle released the first at home coffee pod machine over a decade ago, there have been many companies breaking into the market. This influx of at home coffee machines have made the coffee pod price slowly reduce, making it more popular than instant coffee. There isn't multiple households on each street that do not own a version that can brew coffee using a pod.
Now which country is winning the race to be the number one coffee pod consumer on the plant? Let's crunch some number shall we. For this article, we will use four dominate coffee drinkers globally. Italy, U.K, U.S.A and Australia.
In the United States, their single pod coffee machine sales have constantly improved by over 5 percent since 2006. In 2006 the market was introduced to a company called Keurig who distribute American brewed single coffee pods. In 2006, they occupied only a 2.2% of all coffee sales. By the end of the 2015 financial year, along with the introduction of Nespresso, coffee retail numbers show that 67% of all coffee consumed in home is from a coffee pod machine.
The U.K, which is predominately a tea drinking nation have also shown a positive up trend in coffee sales. Exactly a 5% growth in coffee pod sales over the last 10 years have propelled the at home coffee pod machine to 42% of all coffee sold in 2015. Nestle hold more than a quarter of the market share with a healthy 32% off all coffee pods sold for their machines.
Italy is a little different to our first two nations. They are arguably the home of the coffee connoisseur. In 2004, Lavazza released their first coffee pod machine. In their first year, sales increase by 17%. Since then, they have averaged 11% per year to dominate the coffee pod market. Today companies such as Nespresso, Gimoka, Gran Caffe Garibaldi and Illy have attempted to steal some market share from Lavazza. Unsuccessful, because as over the end of the 2015 financial year, Lavazza still control 41% over all at home coffee pod machine sales. Mind you, 74% of all coffee brewed today in an Italian household comes from a single pod coffee machine. So there is plenty of market share to go around.
Now for Australia. The sleeping giant. Similar to the U.S, Australia was introduced to pod machines in 2006. Nespresso introduced their first model to an intrigued Australian market. 2006. Pod machines only occupied 5% of the market up until 2010. Then the country was flooded with Nespresso compatible pods. This market penetration saw coffee pod sales rapidly increase. In 2015, 84% of all coffee brewed at home is from a Nespresso or Nespresso equivalent machine. The Nespresso capsules price in Australia is and will always be the premium product, but the Nespresso compatible pod market is growing and eating into Nespresso's market share.
Australia is he winner. Followed by Italy, the USA and finally the UK. I bet you weren't expecting that outcome?
