Distractions Can Affect Your Speed
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Speed is important. If you are fast, you can get your work done and still have time for other things that you want to do, such as working out or enjoying favorite televison shows. Employers value employees who are fast and are often eager to give them more hours and more responsibilities at work. There are some things, however, that can slow you down, whether you are at work or at school. At school, a decrease in speed can affect your grades. You can get behind in your schoolwork and have difficulty catching up. At work, slowing down can affect your job.

You have to be able to focus on your work in order to do your best. If you have distractions in your life, however, it may be very difficult to get your work done on time. There are two different kinds of distractions. One kind is external. Television or music can help people to unwind after they have finished their work, but some people find it difficult to complete their work if there is a television show going on or music playing in the room. If you work better with quiet, you have several options. First, you can leave the room and work elsewhere. Second, you can put in earplugs to try to muffle the noise. Third, you can try your best to ignore the noise. When people learn to manage external distractions, they may be able to get their work done.

Internal distractions are another matter, however. Some kinds of internal distractions are easily fixed. If you have a stomachache because it has been a long time since breakfast, eat something. Getting some food in your stomach should help the pain to go away and make you feel better. If you need to urinate, go to the restroom.

Other kinds of internal distractions are not so easily fixed, however. You can try your best to put them out of your mind and ignore them. If they are not resolved, however, they will continue to interfere with your work and your ability to get your work done. You might be worried about a family situation, for example. This kind of worrying can indeed affect your work. It can interfere with your concentration and creativity. The situation needs to be resolved so that you can be at peace, do your work, and go on with your life.

Once you have learned to manage your distractions, you can do great work. You will be very valuable to your employer. You will earn the respect of your supervisor and your coworkers. After some time, you may be eligible for a raise or a promotion. You may even get an award.
