Lines We Hear In Class
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Many of us have classes we love and classes we hate. We are eager to study for the classes we love, and we often devote a great deal of time to them. The classes we hate, on the other hand, are often put on the back burner. Books for the dreaded, disliked class sit in front of us unopened while we surf the Internet, talk on the phone, or watch television. Finally, we come to the realization that we must also study for the class we hate if we do not want to fail it and wind up with a low G.P.A. because of the F. We then say goodbye to the person on the other end of the line, turn the television or music down (or off), and begin the studying that we have been putting off.

Whether we love or hate a class, there are lines that we hate to hear. One is "You have a test on Monday." For those among us who like to party or go shopping on the weekends, this line gets us thinking, "Oh, great. I know what I'll be doing this weekend." Those of us who are the studious, quiet type, on the other hand, still dislike Monday tests. Taking a test is a rough way to start a week. While our extroverted friends and classmates are out partying, however, we will be at home, studying. By making good use of our time, we hope to get a good grade on the test so that maybe Monday will not be such a bad day.

Another dreaded line is "You have a paper due next week." Hearing this line means that the next few days will consist of busyness and, quite possibly, some late nights. Papers have to be well written, logically organized, and properly cited, otherwise you will lose points and possibly get a bad grade. Get whatever you need to make your paper-writing session productive and successful, such as a cup of coffee and perhaps some earplugs, and then get busy. Start on your paper early so that you have time to step away from it periodically. By taking a break, you can avoid getting frustrated with it. A brief intermission may also give you ideas for what to write about. After your break, you can go back to your paper, feeling inspired.

In addition to the lines we hate, there are also lines that we love to hear in class. One is "Write your name on a sheet of paper, and hand it in." This line is common when a substitute is filling in for a college professor. Another favorite line is "Class dismissed!" When professors make this announcement, they are prepared to move out of the way to avoid the stampede. Students will race for the door, eager for a little free time before their next class. My personal favorite is "No class Friday. I'm going to a conference."

If you are a college student, you have heard these lines before. If you will be starting college in the fall, you will likely hear them. Enjoy your college experience. It is not all fun and games, but it is well worth your time, money, and effort.
