Meeting the Challenges Of Being An International Student at University In the UK

The UK is one of the favourite destinations for international students as it is renowned for the quality of its university education. If you are thinking of coming to study at university in the UK rather than in your home country, you know that there will be a number of different challenges you will have to face including studying in a different language, adjusting to a different culture and different teaching  styles and methodology.  However, there are also many rewards to be gained in studying as an international student.

Listed below are 5 actions I would advise you to take if you’re coming to study in the UK

1.  Research before you arrive

Do as much research as you can before you arrive about the UK, the city you’ll be living in and the university you’re studying at.  This will mean that when you do arrive you will at least have a basic understanding of some of the new experiences ahead.

2.  Integrate with home students

It may be tempting to spend all your time with other international students who come from the same country, but if you do you won’t be taking full advantage of the opportunities being offered to you.  Make sure that you mix with lots of other students, which will give you plenty of opportunity to practice your communication skills, improve your English and gain an understanding of other cultures.

3.  Join a society, group or club

There are lots of different groups, clubs and societies to join at university.  You will be told about many of them during your first week at university.  Joining a club  or society that interests you will give you the opportunity to meet and make friends with people who have similar interests.

4.  Accept differences in learning

The chances are that when you come to study in the UK you will receive a very different learning experience from the one you are used to in your own country.  Undergraduates in the UK are expected to be autonomous or self-directed learners which means that they have to take a lot of responsibility for their own learning and although they receive guidance from lecturers or professors they have to do a lot of work with little support.  You will also be expected to give your own opinion and contribute to discussion on different topics in seminars.

5.  Familiarise yourself with facilities and services

There are many facilities and services to support all students at university, including some that are specifically for international students such as specific language support.  Make sure that you make the time to familiarise yourself with the different facilities (such as the library, sports facilities), and services (such as International Student Services, and the Student Union...)  available to you. Even if you don't need to use them immediately it's good to know about them and where you can acces them.

If you are going to successfully obtain your degree and enjoy your time studying in the UK, there are a number of different actions that you would be advised to take, in order to meet the different challenges you will face at university.  The five actions mentioned above are just a taste of some of the things that you should do to make life at uni as comfortable as possible.  To get the most out of your time, check out the different facilities and services available and take the time to mix with a range of students.
