Use of qualitative methods of data collection is desirable when the researcher intends to answer questions such as why and how.
Many refer to qualitative methods as easy to use because they do not require statistical analyses. However, selection of any research methods should not provide a chance for incomplete research investigations. It is not a chance to run away from research responsibilities, because you get a penalty from lecturer. Remember perfection is an important component of research paper writing, and lecturers/tutors reward it.
Whether the researcher aims at simplifying research writing or not, research study must provide satisfactory explanations and address research issues raised, exhaustively. Research paper writers must therefore learn to determine when it is necessary to apply qualitative methods in collecting data and when not to. Here are tips on the same;
Tip 1: When researchers do not intend to use statistical inferences.
This may happen due to directions from lecturers or tutors, or simply due to unavailability of data. In addition, some studies do not suit statistical analyses because of nature of topics and issues raised. Studies involving immeasurable variables are suited by qualitative analysis and therefore, qualitative methods of data collection.
In some courses of study, the practice and tradition is to understand population by engaging their culture and interacting with them. Hence, there is no need for using statistical inferences.
Tip. 2: When the questions to answer are why and how.
With little explanations, questions such as ‘why’ and ‘how’ are better answered by investigation of behavior of population or sample. In addition, interaction with the population makes it possible to understand cultural behavior, what they are going through, why and how they manage.
In this case, the researcher writer applies reasoning and perception, and considers his/her opinions or those of outsiders, in analysis. Such are used to explain processes, behavior and meanings of them.
Tip 3: When researcher wants to gain full control of study.
The researcher does not have to use structured questionnaires as is the case with application of quantitative methods. He has the right to determine what to and what not to include in the questionnaires. In addition, he has right to generate any questions and analyze matters in view of as many topics as may be possible, as long as the collection and analysis of data opens the way. In fact, it is said that he/she is the instrument of data collection.
Tip 4: When there is no limitation on hypothesis testing and nature of results.
I mentioned above that research paper writers are the instruments of data collection. This means results of same study may vary depending on who does the research. Again, they have greater influence on outcome of results because of freedom of what questions to include in questionnaires, what topics to include in the interview and freedom to direct or guide analysis.
The researcher tends to use subjective measurements: this is obvious because it is not possible to verify the methods objectively. In other words, it is their nature. He/she is free to generate ‘follow-up questions’ during analysis and collection of data. In addition, the study does not begin with a pre-determined hypothesis, but research writers generate it during analysis and collection of data.
