As you may enter the end of the senior year in high school or decides to change their career path one might ask “ Should I go to college?” The truth is there is no simple yes or no to this question. The answer to the question might include more questions such as “ Why should I go to college? How can college benefit me? Is college for me? How can I become a good student? Will I succeed?
While these questions come easy for most, some people have a hard time making the decision to go to college. Some things that may affect the decision to go could be finances, family issues, and sometimes the fear of failure. It is easy to see why finances and family issues may be a factor but why might fear of failure be a concern. 1) if someone has problems committing. 2) Having past academic struggles 3)low self-esteem. All three of these can be a problem but should not be a major setback.
What if I told you that going to college and succeeding can come down to three simple questions and a plan? It is that simple. Ask yourself these questions: a) Who am I? b) What kind of career do I want c) What do I see myself doing in 10 years? You may not have an answer to all of them but you should get a sheet of paper and answer these the best way you can to figure out where to start.
If your answers come out to be a list then you answered them right because there is no simple answer at this time .The questions will stay in your mind as you start college and should remain in your head and will help you to figure out what you should gain from college. Of course on the movies you see college as this place where you see people get drunk, go to parties and wake up next to the cops but college is the experience of finding yourself and learning how to survive in the “real world”. Yep, the real world where mom is not responsible for paying your rent, waking you up, making you breakfast and calling her friend to get you a job. Of course Moms are great and look out for you now but you gotta imagine life on your own at some point! Face it! One day you are going to get tired of her nagging about you cleaning your room and telling you when to bring her car back. College is so much fun but you learn so much about life and being independent.
How can you succeed? I have answered some of that already but get it in your head that when you go to college it is your choice and it is up to you to make things happen. There is no bell and professors are not going to ask you did you do the homework last night. You are responsible for you so if you screw it up it is your life to think about. Not mom’s, not your friends.
Part of being successful in college by making the grades and gaining the all the necessary experience in college is dependent on your motivation and your attitude. No matter what life throws at you if you are motivated and your attitude is “ I am going to make it” you got it!
For everybody who make excuses I can tell you that I made it. You want to know my story? Stay tuned.
