The Main Types Of Plagiarism

If you’ve ever been searching for “what is plagiarism”, you must have come across different types of plagiarism being mentioned. Of course, “directly copying someone else’s work to pass off as your own” is the easiest way to define this sort of malpractice, and it screams dishonesty. But that’s only a part of the bigger picture, as plagiarism seeks ways of becoming more creative at best, and just more evasive at worst. To categorize these “mutations” occurring due to a persecution of plagiarism and plagiarists, a few most common types and terms are used. However, you may find articles further dividing types of plagiarism into different subcategories and giving them more creative names. This can be interesting to read as well, but in order not to make everything more complicated, let’s focus on the main types of plagiarism: Deliberate (Direct), Paraphrase, Patchwork and Accidental plagiarism.

Deliberate (Direct) Plagiarism

This one (also referred to as word-for-word plagiarism) is obviously the easiest to track down and the most offensive, but this type is less common now as plagiarism checkers have turned from rare things into essentials. Gone are the days of reckless copy-pasting and papers awkwardly assembled from parts of scraped text overnight, or even just hours before they needed to be turned in. Today, everybody seems to be aware that direct plagiarism will be easily found and seriously punished. Still, this doesn’t mean that you can’t run into deliberate plagiarism anymore.

Dishonesty often thrives wherever someone is looking for very cheap options, or for examples to prove this awesome â„–1 Fool’s theory: cheap + fast=good quality. It seems that we’ve all been warned, by others or our own experience, but that doesn’t prevent people from looking for cheap essays online or narrowing their search to “buy papers online cheap”. This comes with a high risk of getting a paper that has been “recycled” or poorly rewritten from papers that have been sold to someone else before, which can get you into serious trouble due to plagiarism issues. So if you wish to use online writing services, search for those that have a good reputation and provide a plagiarism-free guarantee. Some even have a money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with the results – and while just getting your money back would not solve any problems arising from papers ordered online, such money-back guarantee is a good sign that the writers will be trying their best to produce high-quality work.

Paraphrase Plagiarism

A younger sibling of direct plagiarism, paraphrase plagiarism attempts to disguise itself by changing some of the words, phrases, and sentence parts while copying the others, or by simply reordering the original words and sentence structures. These changes and rearrangements are often awkward or inappropriate and easily spotted by teachers, while the remaining parts of the original text are detected and highlighted (usually in red) by plagiarism checkers, making the entire piece of writing look like a red flag.

Paraphrase plagiarism is really like a silly younger brother who doesn’t want to learn anything from the elder one’s mistakes, thinking he can do better. Sloppy paraphrase plagiarism is often so ridiculous, like stealing someone’s brown coat and replacing the brown or black buttons by neon green ones to make it look different (probably sewing the buttons on with some red or blue thread, too). Of course, the owner would recognize his coat by many other details, but anybody else would also think something is wrong with that coat. Such paraphrase plagiarism should really be wearing a sign “do not try this at home”, as the only thing that sets it apart from direct plagiarism is a bunch of green buttons – which is nothing more than an evidence of stealing the entire coat. However, paraphrase plagiarism sometimes occurs due to missing citations or poor referencing – which can make it a part of another type of plagiarism known as accidental, but will hardly make it excusable.

Accidental plagiarism

Accidental plagiarism results from using parts of someone’s writing without quoting and attributing the material to the original sources. Of course, it can occur due to lack of attention or time to proofread a paper, so we could assume the consequences of plagiarism that’s unintentional should be less serious. However, it isn’t exactly so.

True, accidental plagiarism can look like an absent-minded student with a face quite puzzled and innocent, but if it’s not just a few missing quotes you see if the paper is full of problem spots that should have been referenced, are you still going to consider this accidental? Probably not. Another common thing is failing to track all the sources used during research for writing a paper, or making notes that are so messy the sources end up being confused. This can be accidental, but deliberate misquoting the sources (indicating wrong or nonexistent ones) is far more common. Because of lost, incomplete or messy notes, when not willing to put extra effort into finding the right sources, many students choose this “bad gateway” method to make their paper look like it has got proper references. To them, it may seem better than nothing, but teachers don’t think so. Any reader who actually wants to find the original source(s) to get more information wouldn’t think so, either.Patchwork plagiarismIt has little in common with the lovely handmade items created by skilled people who have a passion for fragments and patterns. However, this kind of plagiarism bears some resemblance to the earlier days of patchwork, when style was held hostage by scarcity and poverty. “Newer” patches were often placed on top of older ones to cover another hole or two, and pieces of thin fabric were sandwiched together in desperate attempts to add some thickness, warmth or durability to worn-out stuff – because people could not afford better. In a similar way, these who resort to patchwork plagiarism can’t “afford” to structure their writing without borrowing phrases or ideas from others – meaning that they lack skills, time or desire to do that, or this may be due to lack of sufficient knowledge and in-depth research of the topic.

While it is not uncommon to patch some material together that was borrowed from a single source (which is easily detectable), many cases of patchwork plagiarism involve mixing in odds and ends scraped across a variety of articles, books or websites, which may add to an insignificant total percentage being flagged by a plagiarism checker.

Patchwork plagiarism

Mosaic plagiarism is another term for this type of content theft in small amounts, giving us hope that by making the fragments small, we can chip them off others’ works to use for the construction and embellishment of our own, and get away with it. However, this isn’t as easy as it sounds though it may happen when the percentage of non-original content shown on your plagiarism report is less than 10%, which is usually acceptable. “A single thread from everyone -and there’s a shirt for a naked one” may be a good old idiom, but it’s definitely not a good style, akin to that poverty-generated patch-over-patch mismatch. What many students ignore when patch-writing are the differences in style and specific vocabulary – which can be simply put as “not all words are equally welcome within a certain style or type of paper”. These are the subtle nuances that may pass under the radar of plagiarism software, but will be noticed by the teachers.

As you can see, plagiarism can wear different faces, but regardless of that, it’s detectable by plagiarism websites and teachers, academically dishonest and punishable. The only way to make borrowing from the works of others look like appropriate research methods is using references, quotations or footnotes.
