Restoring Intimacy In Marriage: Its About More Than Just Sex

It is not always easy to keep the sparks flying in your marriage. Married couples often find it hard to maintain intimacy while working, taking care of the kids, and dealing with the every day stresses of life. Whether you have been married for a few months or for several decades, your marriage may need a little revitalization. If this is the case, here are three ideas to help restore the intimacy in your marriage.

The first, and perhaps most important, way to restore the intimacy in your marriage is to initiate and maintain an open and honest dialogue with your spouse. These conversations may be difficult and uncomfortable, but opening up about what you are feeling may bring you and your spouse closer together. Discuss issues that are bothersome to you and encourage your spouse to do the same. Keep in mind that this is designed to restore the intimacy in your marriage, so refrain from playing the blame game or becoming the victim. Discuss ways to fix the situation in a positive and upbeat manner. It may take a few conversations before intimacy is restored, so keep talking.

Another way to restore the intimacy in your marriage is to focus on the non-sexual aspect. For example, show your spouse some extra respect. Don’t hold back on the compliments. Show a little extra appreciation for the every day things your spouse does for you. Offer to help preparing dinner or help with housework. Spend some extra time together. Try going on dates and getting to know each other again or hold hands while watching television. Non-sexual physical contact not only shows your spouse that he or she matters to you, but also helps to pave the road to restoring your lost intimacy.

Finally, scheduling alone time with your spouse is yet another way to restore the intimacy in your marriage. Sit down with your spouse and agree on a time and date resume intimacy. This may not be the most romantic scenario, but it is certainly better than going without. If possible, send the kids to grandma’s house and make a whole evening of it complete with a romantic dinner. You may find that scheduling a time for intimacy helps to relieve the pressure and awkwardness often associated with the rekindling process. After a few scheduled interactions, you might just find that the spontaneity that has been missing has been restored.

Restoring intamacy in marriage can be very tricky, but it is not impossible. I'm pulling for ya. I know without a doubt you can make it work. You just need to believe in yourself.
