How does a person determine what is Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness? Let’s be up front. The definition differs with each individual. Oh sure, you could look in a dictionary and find a universal meaning of the word, but as a people, this definition is a reflection of our lives and experiences.

To each of us Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are different. I know because I read what’s out there and the statements and arguments of many forums just make my ears ring! There is profanity and anger expressed by people who think that if you disagree with them you’re wrong and need to be straightened out! The next thing you know and one finds themselves in front of a judge being sued by someone or an organization that is screaming violation of their rights by your opinion or beliefs, or whatever.

My way of defining Life may be different that yours, or Liberty, or my Pursuit of Happiness. But is that any reason to sue me just because you disagree with me?? As long as I don’t abuse someone or something that physically damages someone or denies services based on gender, then there should be no problem. Now I must confess that I am a Christian man and believe in moral absolutes, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. However, that is no reason to discriminate and abuse someone who thinks or believes differently!

Early in the 20th century we did more talking and less texting or being online. We got together face to face and talked! I remember a few years ago, I was one of a few adults supervising our church group of kids. At a meeting place to get ready to leave I noticed two girls sitting by one of the exhibits texting away on their phones. Further observation generated a sickening feeling. I noticed that while one was texting, the other was reading, and then it would reverse. I said excuse me are you texting each other and they said yes! I then asked if they heard of talking and they gave me a weird look! They said their conversation was private (which for the internet is an oxymoron!) and didn’t want anyone to hear them. I asked them if they ever heard of whispering and they thought I was crazy!

We’ve become a non-talking, non-listening culture. We don’t slow down and listen to the people we come in contact with. We have become the most important thing in our lives and we shun all others…even in the family. The family has become the most misused and abused entity in our culture. It is the basis of our civilization and our society has become degraded especially in recent times.

So what am I getting at? Should we get rid of cell phones and computers and the internet?? NO! What I’m saying is don’t let the people you see around you slip by. Maintain eye contact and smile. This shows to them that you’re not a threat to their comfort zone. Later, acknowledging them opens for a few words and then maybe conversation with the trust between you two increasing. If it goes any further, you’ve developed a friendship. You have opened up to trust, compassion, and the possibility of opening up to more personal things that may benefit both of you because their experiences add to yours and you have a more solid ground to search your life and the lives of those you know to find an asset to your life, and you toward them! You become more open to listening to people and to be listened to so that there is less of a conflict if you disagree. This is how true peace and bliss comes out in your behavior. You experience less stress, the blood pressure goes down, and you become more aware of those around you. In this way you will be on the journey of fine tuning your true meaning of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, and who knows, you may also be a major influence in helping others find their meaning to a peaceful and joyful life. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing from the beginning? Until next time!
