Unblock Facebook In China - November & December 2012

With the upcoming 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, you can bet that the internet in China is going to be spotty for the next couple of weeks, maybe even months. Though being able to unblock Facebook in China is normally impossible without the help of a VPN, you may find that during this period, it's going to be even harder. This is just speculation on my part, but China has show in the past that during times ramping up to important political events, more sites are blocked, and less VPNs are able to tunnel the GFW.

But November and December are also times when much of the Western world begins celebrating traditional holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year. It's a time to be with family and friends. But if you're in China, you main method of communicating is going to be through the internet. Skype, Facebook, Gmail, and MSN - all of which are either permanently blocked or have spotty connections at times.

How can you ensure that communicating with your family and friends overseas is not going to be thwarted by a overzealous and protective Chinese government?

Well, VPNs are part of the answer. But the truth is that not all VPN services work, and not all types of VPNs work.

A VPN service is simply a business that owns or operates VPN servers in different countries around the world. They allow you to access these private networks for privacy and security online, whether it be for bypassing internet censorship in China, Vietnam, and Iran, or increasing the security of your connection on shared wifi. Some services have had their websites blocked in China, some haven't.

The you've got to consider the VPN protocol. While many services can be accessed in China, not all provide VPN connections that allow you to tunnel the GFW. For example, a few years ago, we saw that many PPTP and L2TP VPN services were unable to provide service to users in China because these VPN protocols were blocked. Even OpenVPN occasionally experiences issues.

However, with the right VPN service, one that has experience battling the GFW and internet censorship in China it's possible to get VPN access on your phone, computer, and tablets, regardless of the situation. I'll be the first to admit that the technical details are beyond me, but it is possible to have custom VPN protocols for China. These can give you unrestricted access to Facebook, YouTube, and other blocked sites in China on your mobile phone, even when standard protocols are blocked. They can ensure your computer is 100% unaffected by a nosey Chinese ISP, even during a government crackdown.

The point is that using a VPN in China is no longer about finding the cheapest VPN or the VPN with the most features, it's about finding the VPN service that knows China's internet.
