Game Devs Granting the Wishes Of the Players Not the Best Idea

For anyone that has played a MMORPG, you know that I'm talking about. For most, the game "World of Warcraft" comes to mind to many, seeing as that is the MOST mainstreamed game out in today's society. I will be the first to say that I personally have not played WoW, but I have enough mmorpg experience to explain this particular topic.

The Game Developers are only making games for one reason (apart from having a passion for it), and that is to make money. In any type of business, you often hear the term "The Customer is ALWAYS right". In most cases they are, but when it comes to updates, patches, etc to the mmorpgs...then in that sense it can be a very bad thing. Why you may ask? Well it is often that the community (The players) openly voice their feelings about certain things that should be added, taken out, or what needs to be fixed. So what do the Game Devs do? they take all of it into consideration and build their content accordingly. The thing is...and this is something I personally learned through being in and out of the gaming communities, that isn't always the greatest thing to do.

Some Game Devs believe by giving them what they want, that is a good thing, but in turn that just gives them something else to complain about. "Why is this even in here? I wish it was taken out of the game." is what you would see when it comes out. But 3 weeks ago "I wish they would put this and that into the game, that would be awesome!!". This is where community managers come in, where they can sort out what the players what and what they don't want.

Thing is, they have to look at exactly what they put in a content update, because Game Devs have to factor in what is a good business move. If they believe it's not in good interest to put it in there, then best believe it's not going to be in the game. To give you a prime example of this, Take a look at one of Blizzard's Masterpieces "World of Warcraft." the developers are one of the few that literally just give the customer what they wanted. Through doing this they were getting a small surge of people joining and paying monthly to play it.

However shortly after they end up leaving in droves when new MMOs come out. Why? Well through talking with many retired WoW players, they simply state that the game has become WAY too easy and isn't anywhere near as challenging as when it first started. Most of even have gone far enough to say that for people that don't know what they are doing, they can go from Level 1 to whatever max level cap is in about a few weeks. This also included having the gear, instances done, mounts, the works pretty much. For the most part this is a Pay 2 play aspect, for free 2 play games are slightly different, yet carry the same principal.

My opinion on Game Devs granting player's wishes:

Well, I know for me I'm not a hard person to please, considering to the fact I love playing mmos and seeing my character develop through hard work. But basically, Game Devs really need to sit back and take a few minutes to see how this will impact their product as a whole. Yea.. it's nice to make 40 people happy, but what about the other 300+ people you just pissed off now? I'm not a Game Dev (yet, though I'm working towards trying to be one, among other things), but from my experience, watching many people complain about the content updates in the game, on the forums, or even on fansites...they simply need to learn that you will not be able to appease everyone of your player-base.

Street Talk

I often see online games as negative before. But today, I came to understand why people play those games. I myself was even hooked by one game before.

I mean games can have both a positive and negative effect on people. And I guess with the "hardcore" types, they forget the most important aspect of gaming, to have fun. This is coming from a "former" hardcore who didn't mind spending 10-15 Hours in front of a console or a PC trying to improve myself and get better.

Kind of like life. You really want something until you get it. And, of course, the inverse, you never know how much you liked something until it's gone.

Understandable. Just alot of people prefer a challenge now and days (which is completely fine). But on the business side of things, there are more causal players than the hardcore...so put a product that caters to them more so than the hardcore.

Yea that's about it. Like I mentioned before I have never played WOW, but I've always heard from retiring players on how easy it is and how the game is no longer appealing for them. By no means am I saying that WoW is bad.. (Obviously they are doing something right if they still are pulling in a million odd some subs) but.. at the same time they need to make it more challenging. But like you said, people will whine till they get equal chance.

Yeah I would have to agree, as an X WoW player myself, the reason I left the game is it was just to easy, even as far back as The Burning Crusade they were making it so much easier, It's a damn shame to because when TBC first came out it was challenging enough to be interesting but casual enough so that you didn't have to dedicate 10 hrs a day to get anywhere in the game, like EQ. It was a very nice balance, but I guess much like welfare in the US, some people work for it and the rest whine until they get an equal share for doing none of the work.

F2p Game, Here to Stay
Just a few years ago, “free to play” was MMO code for “incredibly grindy” and “pay to win” games. The vast majority of them hailed from Korea, and they were at best mindless distractions between other, better games. World of Warcraft changed all that. While it may be on a…
