How to Master Protoss In Starcraft 2 Using the 4 Gateway Build Order

Protoss is probably one of the most overlooked race in Starcraft 2. Most players online prefer either Terran or Zerg but Protoss can be a fun and easy race to play and ultimately dominate with. What most players forget is that Protoss is a race that is highly dependant on gas so always keep that in mind when using it. In this article ill be going over the few openers in terms of build orders and tips and tricks to get the edge over other Protoss players.

One of the most common mistakes I see Protoss players do is getting gas to late or early on in the game. In Starcraft 2, you always have to be adjusting to what your opponents are doing and be mindful of what your economy can support. Some examples of this are: never get more than 4 Gateways until you have successfully expanded at your natural, Getting too much collosus if you are doing the 3 Gateway Robo Build Order and lastly forgetting to upgrade, upgrade, and upgrade.

Upgrades can be the tide turner between early and mid game battles. WIth the recent balance change of Patch 1.4.2, Blizzard has made Protoss much easier on your economy to upgrade your units. Upgrades such as the Charge for your zealots or Blink for your stalkers can be really helpfull in the game especially since this race gets better and better with each upgrade researched making domiating other players easier. So stop telling yourself that Terran and Zerg are overpowering.

One of the most common build orders that alot of lower players use is the Protoss 4 Gateway Build Order. This Build Order is meant to overpower your opponent early on in the game with units but what sets apart diamond players and bronze players is when to stop probe production! Yes this can be hurtful in your economy, but this build order will not successfully work if you dont do so. Making those few extra probes can cost you those essential 2-3 stalkers that might win the battle for you.

With the Protoss 4 Gateway Build Order, I also see the mistake of not knowing when to quit. With this I mean, when to stop attacking your opponent, fall back, expand or tech so you stay ahead of your opponent in the game. Most players will keep making units which will successfully contain your opponent into your main base, but your opponent might be teching up to higher units which will ultimately lead to you losing the game.

This Protoss Build Orderis a great standard build for most opponents and yes even the top players from Starcraft 2 still use it! But what sets them apart from me and you is knowing when to adjust accordingly to the particular match you are in. From the words of the famous Starcraft 2 Commentator Tasteless: "What do you do when your ahead? You get more ahead!"
