Rift Tanking Guide

In the Rift universe, one of the most exciting endeavors is teaming up with a number of other players to take on some epic fight together - whether it be a dungeon full of monsters or a battle against other real players in PvP action. In these groups of forces, there are 3 main roles: Damage, Healer, and Tank. In this article I'll be explaining the importance and responsibility of a Tank that all should know well, as well as diving into strategies and optimal builds for tanks in the game of Rift.

Tanks are the unofficial leaders of a group, you could say. Their role is to lead the group by pulling monsters and being at the front of the fight, soaking up damage from the opponents while the damage dealers (dps) focus on killing them. The role of Tank holds great responsibility. They must keep the mobs under control and make sure the dps/healers of their group do not take much damage or attention from the opponents. He/she who chooses to take up the role of a Tank should be prepared to lead and always be attentive and responsible.

Advantages of Leveling as a Tank: Being a Tank has it's perks. One main upside of being a tank while leveling is that Tanks are greatly needed when groups form to run dungeons. It's fact that DPS (damage dealing) characters take up the vast majority or players in Rift, and that tanks and healers are minorities. Simply put, there are not that many tanks, and a group NEEDS one to run a dungeon. Thus, if you enjoy running dungeons, being a tank will guarantee you an easier and faster time finding a group.

Rift offers 4 main archetypes for your character: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Cleric. All of these can seemingly be made into a tanking class, but Warriors are the most prominent. Warrior Tanks are the dominant tanks of Rift. If you are just starting in Rift and want to try tanking, I would suggest starting with a Warrior Tank.

There are 2 main builds I would recommend diving into to optimize your Warrior as a Tank:

  • The first is heavy in the Paladin soul (45) and some in the Warlord soul (11) and Reaver soul (11). Your points should be spent in that order as you level: Paladin, Warlord, then Reaver. This build is ideal for PvE tanking, or, tanking dungeons with groups. The Paladin soul utilizes many defensive abilities and shields, as well as being able to shield other group members from damage with magic.
  • The second build I would recommend has the Void Knight as your primary soul, with Paladin and Warlord as your secondary souls. This build gives one huge major perk: +70% armor. This build also provides a massive advantage against casters who attack with magic as it comes with abilities that reduce magic damage and can crowd control casters.

If you want to learn more about these builds, you can find more information in a professional Rift leveling guide.

Rogue tanks utilize the Riftstalker soul as their primary soul. The ability Boosted Recovery aids greatly to rogue tanks, allowing them to receive bonus healers and boost their hit points. Rogues can output a lot of damage, but they do have a few downsides when it comes to tanking. Rogue tanks have a more difficult time dealing with large groups of mobs. Threat, or "aggro" (attention of a monster) is harder to maximize. Also, rogue tanks lack some avoidance. That being said, I would not recommend a Rogue for Tanking as a beginner, but, it can be done with some adapting and practice.

Mages and Clerics should really not be looked to for a tanking role. Mages are built to wear little armor, and deal damage and control mobs with magic at a distance. Clerics are built to mainly be healers, the "opposite" of a tank. The only reason I could see for trying to make a Mage or Cleric into a Tank is if you were determined to be different or to take up a challenge, or were simply bored with a Warrior/Rogue tank and wanted to try something else out. If you are looking simply for an optimal way to start as a tank, do not choose a Mage or Cleric. I would again suggest a Warrior.

I hope this overview will guide you in the right direction for building your Tank. I've covered the basics as best I can here, if you're seeking more specifics on leveling your tank, you can look for more information in a detailed Rift leveling guide.

Best of luck - hold that aggro!
