In this modern age, finding a private VPN service has never been easier, because there are simply so many different providers to choose from. Some providers offer their services at a very low price, while others are much more expensive. Furthermore, there is such a wide range of different options for a VPN, that it is very difficult to know whether one VPN is better or worse than another.
There are two main aspects that you can consider when you are trying to work out whether a particular VPN service is any good for what you need. The first is to look at what other people have to say about the service. Customer reviews can be particularly revealing, because they will often tell you things about the provider that the company itself will not make known.
For example, some VPN providers have a fantastic amount of options for consumers, but have absolutely horrifying customer service. In some cases, the customer service representatives do not know what they are talking about, and have no one to refer you to who does. In other cases, I've seen them give nothing more than a link to the FAQ, which needless to say, was not much help.
Normally, if a VPN provider has very poor customer service, they will have received a lot of negative feedback from people online. However, it is very important that you look for information about customer perceptions of the VPN provider from an unbiased source, because locations such as the company’s website are likely to gloss over any potential problems that you might face.
The second aspect you want to consider is the options that the VPN offers. Now this is an area where VPN providers may be very different from one another. There are a lot of different options which can affect whether or not this particular setup will meet your needs. For example, you may want a high security VPN for wifi use, but some services only offer PPTP connections. You may need to unblock geo-restricted websites in Europe, but they only offer servers in The US. Obviously, comparing a few services is needed to make a good decision.
Nevertheless, perhaps the most important option to evaluate when comparing one private VPN service based on the privacy metric, the most important thing to watch is their privacy policy and terms of use. Many services call themselves "Private", but they many not be as private as you think. The most common culprits are 'timestamps', which match a users account info to an IP on the network. This is used for quality control and does not log your actual activity.
Another thing to consider is the ability to switch VPN servers. VPN providers offer a number of different servers, with the exact amount varying depending on the provider. This means that some of the servers are in different countries, while many countries have a large number of servers provided. If the VPN service lets you switch the server you are using often, you can ensure that you are never bogged down in online traffic, and that you can access the online content that you are interested in.
