Beginners Guide To Masking Your IP Address
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Whether it's to hide, change, or mask your IP address, pretty much all these term refer to anonymous surfing - the browsing of the Internet under an identity other than you own.  If this is the first time you're hearing this term, it might sound like something illegal - it's not.  Though it can be used for the forces of Internet evil, most people using this kind of technology are actually doing to as a preventive measure against the bad guys.  Here's why.

Your IP addresses identifies your computer, and it says a lot about your browsing and clicking  history, and your general activity while connected to the Internet. When you share a network with someone, ie at an Internet cafe or other local wifi spot, it's extremely not only to spy on, but also to intercept traffic of people you're sharing your network. In other words, the guy across from you in the cafe could be watching what you're doing.  He could also be  using software to catch any passwords or login credentials that you send across the network. Facebook logins, email passwords, and even credit card information.  Masking your IP address prevents this.

How?  Well, spying starts with choosing who to spy on.  This is done by watching your IP address. Your friendly neighborhood hacker doesn't type in "spy on the guy with the mocha sitting in the red chair" - he's going to track your activity based on your IP alone.  When he can't see your IP, he can't see you. It's as simple as that.  By masking your IP address with an IP outside of your network, you become invisible.

More so, though there are several ways to mask your IP address on the Internet, by using a VPN, you add layers of security that mean even if someone was able to find out that you were using IP masking tools, they wouldn't be able to spy, because everything would be encrypted, allowing only your computer/phone and the VPN server to decrypt it.

Masking your IP address on the Internet with a virtual private network is easier than you think. You don't have to invest in any hardware, installation only takes a few minutes, and once you're connected, there's no maintenance.  Just choose a server location, click connect, and you're officially invisible to you network, and surfing the Internet anonymously!  Anonymous surfing is also a great way to bypass firewalls - which means you can get on sites like Facebook and YouTube at work and school, or access other firewall blocked sites.
