Browse The Web Anonymously

Everything you do online can be traced back to you if you use your real IP address. When you download music or movies online - people can find out your IP and where you live. If you're in New Zealand or The UK, you don't want this. If you browse forums and block, web masters can see the IP of your phone or computer as you leave comments and chat with other users. Every time you send an email the header of your email can be analyzed and your IP is just part of the stuff that' in there. Knowing the IP address of another user online is usually the first step in identity theft, harassment, or other forms of malicious online activity. Internet censorship in some areas of the world can seriously restrict your internet potential (like China, Vietnam, Iran, and Egypt) This is why many users are starting to browse the web anonymously.

Typically, proxies and VPNs are used to hide the IP address of a phone or computer. These are two very different tools, and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Proxies

There are a large variety of proxies, and therefore a wide range of anonymity that can be achieved with them. Some proxies provide complete anonymity - and an IP address that to most computers/servers looks like your everyday IP. Others make contact with web servers and not only show that they're a proxy, but also provide the web server with your real IP information. There are free proxies, or open proxies, which are public access proxy servers that can be used with your web browser to surf anonymously or change your IP to a different country. There are also paid services which require a monthly fee for access to premium servers and support.

Virtual private networks

Better security, more reliable connections, and a wider range of IP locations makes VPNs a bit of a step of from proxies. Of course, you'll have to pay for it, as most decent VPN service require a monthly fee for access to their servers. VPNs have a variety of uses tied to anonymous web browsing.

First and foremost, they're the most secure way to hide your IP on open networks, where deep packet searching and side jacking are always a risk. Second, they can be used to change your IP to a different country, and get access to foreign websites that are blocked where you are. Third, they can be used to fight internet censorship - both unblocking sites and rerouting your traffic through secure servers outside of "big brother's" watch.

More than just being able to browse the web anonymously, you'll also be able to chat, download, call, upload, stream, email, and game anonymously. Remember that proxies only change the IP of your web browser.

Conclusion

I think it's obvious that I prefer virtual private networks to proxies. As an internet user in China, I can clearly see the advantage of have a more advanced and comprehensive form of anonymity for everything you do on the internet.
