Browse the Web Anonymously at Work And School

When you connect to the internet, you're using an ID tool called an IP address. This is unavoidable. Unfortunately, this means that even when you're connected to a shared network, you can be singled out. For example, when you think your boss isn't looking while you check your Facebook account, they can see that by using something called a 'packet sniffer' - something that monitors all traffic over the internet. Same thing applies when you think you're alone in the school library and start doing 'private research', or even if you're using a personal computer and connected to dorm wifi, all traffic passed over that network can be watched, and even filtered for certain types of information. Browse the web anonymously, and the problem is solved.

What does that mean?

Well, from a work perspective, sure, you're pretty safe with your colleagues. No one is going to care how much time you waste on social networking sites, how many cat videos you forwarded during your office hours, or what you check on your smartphone during the day. There are people that do however. And yes, you read that last statement right - even if you use a private device to connect to a public network, the sites you browse and the stuff you download can be seen.

Browsing the web anonymously means that you hide your IP address, and essentially erase your ID from the network. Instead of surfing directly from your location in the office to the web servers where websites are hosted, you take a detour through a third party server. There are different types of level of privacy. In the most basic form, a proxy, your data is simply forwarded through the proxy server and you basically jump the firewall. A more advanced version of this process would be a VPN where your entire data stream is encrypted and you actively prevent third party users from viewing any of your information as it's passed to the private network outside your shared one.

If you're at school the same thing applies. Ok, so other than some 16 year old kid trying to check his email in computer class, there are real students out there that may be concerned about privacy. For example, some sites may be blocked from your school network. You're an adult now - didn't you go to college to get away from all those rules back at home? Even aside from wanting to bypass firewalls and unblock sites, your general safety may be at stake when you connect to shared wifi.

Again, like the example above, you don't need any admin credentials to be able to monitor traffic over a shared network. A quick software download will allow you to see all users on the network, and follow the sites they visit - maybe you can even intercept their data. By hiding your IP address and browsing the web anonymously, you eliminate the chance of being spotted and followed on the school network. Full encryption is going to come from a VPN.
