Cheap Vpn Service Comparison - A Few Observations

When I started using VPN services a few years ago, the only criteria in my crosshairs was price. To be fair, I had just moved to China, had no idea what a VPN service was, and wasn't about to waste a bunch of money on something I didn't really need. As I started blogging and China continually updated their firewall, I realized that The GFW was doing what is was meant to do. Finding fresh news and finding a way to get in on the internet really was difficult. A cheap VPN service no longer suited my needs, so I upgraded.

And so I experienced first hand what many people wonder when signing up for a VPN service the first time. At what point does paying more to get better product turn into paying for bells and whistles I don't need. I tried a few VPN services over the years, and here's what I've observed.

1. You average user doesn't use that much bandwidth.

I originally started with a 'lite' account and was limited to 10GB of bandwidth per month. I had no idea how much 10 GB was, so each time I signed in, I timed myself, and never used it more than 1 or 2 hours a day. I didn't want to waste my bandwidth! Then, after the first month was up, I had used only 2 or 3 gigs. I slowly got lazier and lazier to the point where I left the VPN connected pretty much all the time I was connected to the internet, and I never used more than 5 or 6 GB in a month. That included streaming 1 or 2 hours of video almost every day. The point is that unless you're downloading a bunch of torrents, you're not going to need that much bandwidth. Users looking for privacy online could save a few bucks a month by using a lite service.

2. Server Switching Counts

I used to thing server switching was a boring attribute and I couldn't understand why VPN advertisements made such a big hullabaloo about it. Big deal, you can change your IP. As long as it works, it I don't care what my IP is. But it's more than that. Technology fails, no matter how high tech it is, and when one server malfunctions, you need to be able to switch to another one. Maybe you just want to access streaming TV from other countries. If you're limited to 1 or 2 changes per month, this kind of restriction could be really annoying. I've been there.

3. Live Support is very convenient

Most ticket support systems are pretty slow. Not all the time, but many times it'll take a day to get back to you. If you contact them in the afternoon, you can expect a return email the next morning - later that night at the earliest. With live support you don't have that problem. Live support usually takes care of tech support and sales, so any tech problems can be resolved on the spot. I've been in sticky situations many times, and 1/2 hour messing with live support is better than playing email-tag for 3 days. A VPN service with live support does not always mean you have to pay a premium fee. Many times, live support is available even with discount packages.

Conclusion

These are from my personal experiences with VPN services. There are many VPN review sites on the internet, and they may say different. Sometimes giving a service a test run for 1 month is a good way to start before you commit to a year to get the discounts that most services offer.
