Custom VPN Protocols And The Best VPN In China

China is one of the most famous countries for Internet censorship. So famous that their form of Internet censorship has been dubbed "The Great Firewall of China". Other countries which have also started engaging in Internet censorship have had their firewalls termed "Great", such as the great Firewall of New Zealand and Australia. Regardless of the country you live in and how they censor the Internet however, virtual private networks are a reliable way to become anonymous while you surf.

VPN are literally a "private network" of servers that allow users to sign in and out, adopting IP addresses from the server network when signed in. With the IP of a VPN as your front man to the Internet, you all activity on your phone or computer is filtered through the network, meaning IP tracking devices, packet sniffing tools, and malware are detoured away from your actual IP, and to the VPN server. When connected to a VPN, because you're using the IP address of the server, you also belong to their private network, and not the network of your ISP. That means that even if you're in China, but signed into a VPN server in The USA, your IP will be from the USA. The best VPN services will allow you to switch IP addresses and VPN servers for free.

Some of the best VPN services out there will charge about ten dollars a month for unlimited bandwidth for downloading and uploading, free server switching, and multiple country locations including The US and The UK. However, cheaper and more expensive services do exist.

In China particularly, I would suggest that the best VPN services to choose would be services that have been in the game a while. It's easy to fly under the radar when you've just appeared on the scene, but VPN services with a couple years and experience in China under their belt are going to be your best bet. Even then, within the last year, some of the best VPNs in China have had their main domains blocked, meaning they have to create alternate domain names or shut down operations in China.

The most appropriate VPN in China as far as VPN protocols go is going to be SSL/OpenVPN. This is a combination of SSL encryption and OpenVPN tunneling which will work not only to change your IP address while your browse the Internet, but also to encrypt data and protect this encrypted data as it travels from your computer to the VPN server, and then on to the website requested. This however isn't going to work for mobile phones, and if you have an iPhone or android, the best VPN for China is going to be an IPSec or custom L2TP VPN for smart phone users in China.
