Dangers Of Wifi And Why You Need To Hide Your IP Address Online

I'm pretty new to the idea of hiding your IP address online, and I'm surprised that there are quite a few normal reasons to do this. At first, I thought for sure that this was just something that hackers and porn-fiends used; something to hide their tracks as they wreak havoc across the interwebs. However, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to do this, and many reputable services that provide IP hiding tools.

I was surprised to learn about something called a packet sniffer. It was originally designed as a tool to monitor traffic in a network. For example, if a business had a private network of servers, and they wanted to collect information about where traffic was coming and going from, what kind of information was being exchanged, and where errors were occurring, they could improve the way their business runs. However, this tool can also be used outside of a business situation. For example, when you use a public wifi zone, you too are sharing a network with other people. If someone on that network as a packet sniffer, they can monitor everyone's traffic from the wifi zone. What's scary is that these tools are easy to find, and often free. By hiding your IP address online, you avoid this situation by making yourself invisible. When your IP is hidden, you essentially don't exist on the network, and your traffic can't be spied on.

In the same breath, this can lead to session jacking, where a user on the same network as you uses these traffic monitoring tools to hijack your login sessions. They can steal your passwords, login credentials, and even see your browsing history and other IP data. It's like hijacking your computer. Hiding your IP online is of course the best way to prevent something like this from happening. Remember, that Wifi at cafes, airports, dormitories, school, and work is not as safe as you think. Someone doesn't even have to be in the same location to pick up the network you're connected to!

Bypassing Internet censorship is of course another big reason to hide your IP address online. Not just China and Iran censor the Internet these days. Facebook, YouTube, Skype, Twitter, and many world news sites are blocked around the world. Each country has its unique censorship laws, and reasoning behind them. But by doing this, they are working against what the Internet is really about - an exchange of information. To open up the information exchange once again, you need to change your IP address. By hiding your IP address and masking it with another one from a different location, you can get access to pretty much any blocked site.

Web based proxies are a versatile tool that can be used on a variety of devices simply by accessing the secure browser from your own Internet browser. Virtual private networks however, offer a higher level of security that protect your entire device as opposed to browsing only. Both tools come with a unique set of advantages and disadvantages to users.
