Fast VPN Service - What Affects VPN Speed

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network is an online service that secures a user’s Internet activity on computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets. A fast VPN service encrypts all the data transferred between the user and the VPN server. This service routes all the user requests through a secure tunnel to the VPN server. The VPN server retrieves the requested data on behalf of the user. This keeps hackers and malicious third parties from being able to steal user information while it is being transferred. It also allows the user to access websites who bock access based on user location.

A fast VPN server allocates a new IP address to the user based on the server location. The new IP address protects the user’s identity by hiding their IP address from websites they visit. The IP address assigned by the VPN server also enables the user to bypass location-based censorship. A VPN user is perceived to be located at the VPN server regardless of the user’s actual location.

The speed of the VPN service is affected by following factors:

Server Location: The physical distance between the user and the server location influences the connection speed. If the server is located near the user, connections are faster. As the physical distance between the user and a fast VPN server increases, the latency of the connection increases. Unless the user is trying to bypass location-based content blocking, it is recommended they connect to the nearest VPN server. This will minimize any network routing delays.

VPN Protocol: A fast VPN server offers one of the standard VPN protocols including PPTP, L2TP/IPsec and OpenVPN. Protocols vary in their encryption, speed and device compatibility. For instance, PPTP provides 128-bit encryption. Whereas, L2TP/IPsec provides 256-bit encryption. Users employing PPTP may experience relatively faster speeds than someone using L2TP/IPsec. However, L2TP/IPsec provides better security. OpenVPN provides the best speed and security.

Network Bandwidth: The speed of a fast VPN service is affected by bandwidth availability on the network. A fast VPN server sending data through a low bandwidth network will not be as fast. It is imperative that the user maintains a high bandwidth connection through their ISP.

Client Device: The device used also affects VPN speed. Small devices like iPhones, iPads and Androids have smaller CPUs than typical computers. The data processing speed of such devices is limited. This makes the user’s device a bottleneck when trying to achieve high speed data transfers.

All of these factors affect the speed of a fast VPN service.
