Preparing Yourself To Access Facebook In China On Mac

With the upcoming National Day in China, you can bet your britches that there's going to be a lot of changes happening around here.  If you want to access Facebook in China on Mac OS/X, they you're part of the game as well.  If you've been in China for over a year, you know how the holidays go.  Everyone puts on a smile, cleans up their act, and for a few days, things run like clockwork.  The streets are clean, the laws are enforced, and the Internet usually goes nuts, trying to keep all the activists and western hippies from protesting or causing a scene and making China look like they can't get stuff under control.  The illusion of functionality is often more important that actual functionality, as goes many things in China.  If this is your first holiday in China, then welcome to madness.

So what does this have to do with being able to access Facebook in China on Mac?  Well, after the recent events in Egypt (The "Twitter Revolution"), China's been on high alert for social networking and blogging sites that promote anti-Chinese propaganda.  Now it seems that now only are these sites blocked, but keywords associated with them have been blocked from Google search results.  If you're just showing up and haven't figured out that you need a VPN or a proxy to access Facebook in China on your Mac, you're in for a bit of a surprise.  How can you figure out how to unblock sites in China if you can't get Google to tell you or point you in the right direction? You're going to have to get creative.

Too add to the list of potential problems, those that already own virtual private networks and/or proxies to change IP address and get access to sites blocked by The GFW, you can expect some connectivity problems around the first week of October.  Even the strongest type of data encryption, SSL/OpenVPN is not invincible.  When stuff started going down in Egypt, and eventually moved (in part) to China, with the Jasmine Revolution, VPN sites and VPN connections went haywire, and shook up a lot of services.  It's perfectly feasible that this was just one step in a plan to completely phase out the use of anti-Internet censorship tools in China.  It may be that in the future, we simply won't be able to access Facebook in China on Mac or any other operating system for that matter.

However, this is a lot of speculation on my part.  Nothing is for certain, and its probably going to depend on who shows up for work if they decide to properly do their job that day.
