Proxy And VPN for Vietnam

I realized today that with all the blocked sites in Vietnam, there really aren't a lot of reviews of proxies. The thing about proxies is that they're a real pain to find, and when you do, they're usually not very professional. I just checked, and the first ten results in Google are kind of mixed between random ranges of IP addresses (possibly proxy IPs), and a couple bloggers in Vietnam talking about DNS changes to unblock Facebook. It's really kind of confusing to find a good proxy for Vietnam.

Why proxies?

Well, obviously, there are some blocked sites in Vietnam, namely Facebook. The actual method of unblocking Facebook varies on when you check and where you search, but altering the DNS of your internet device, accessing the Facebook IP directly (rather than the URL), web based proxies, open proxies, and VPNs are some of the most popular ways to access blocked sites.

But a lot of that is just tech-jargon that your average computer user doesn't really understand. Sure, a free way to unblock Facebook and other banned sites in Vietnam sounds great, but have you taken a look at some of these explanations? They're pretty confusing. And if you read the comments below there are more than a few people who are just plain confused.

The point is that proxies make it EASY to change your IP and unblock sites.

Open Proxy VS. Web Based Proxy VS. VPN

So these three things simplify everything, but you've still got to decide which one is best for you.

Open Proxies

Obviously, free is good. Open Proxies are free, so a lot of people choose them. They're easy to use and to set up which is another advantage. Open Proxies work directly with your current browser and just change the IP of your browsing session. Your browser was DESIGNED to use manual proxy settings.

The trouble with these is 1. Security and 2. Reliability. Most importantly they present more of a security risk than they're worth. When you sign into a proxy server of an unknown admin, you're basically giving them access to your personal data, ie anything you pass over the proxy server. Do you trust some guy in Europe or The US giving you free access to his personal sever? I don't. Also, not all open proxies are configured properly, or even considered 'anonymous proxies' so may not allow you to bypass internet censorship in Vietnam.

Web based proxies

How well a web based proxy for Vietnam works is going to depend on which one you use. If you use one of these free proxies that look like they were designed in the early 90's you'll get the same results as open proxies. A slow, unreliable, security risk. There are however, some professional web based proxies operating in Vietnam. The way the proxies are set up vary, but I know that one in particular uses SSL encryption to protect your data from being cracked by other users or even your ISP. Proxies like this work in Vietnam because they don't just change your IP address to unblock sites, they actually protect your privacy online.

One disadvantage of web based proxies is that they only work with web based activities, and not all proxies work with Flash. Though most web based proxies will not work with sites like Hulu or Netflix, there are some that support flash, which means you'll be able to access social media sites, YouTube, and web based games.

Virtual Private Networks

These are the ultimate solution to unblocking internet censorship. They solve the security risks of open proxies by providing you with professional grade service. They change the IP of all your online activity, including non web based stuff (including apps, software, games, and VoIP). VPNs not only encrypt your data but also provide a VPN 'tunnel' to send it safely from your current location to a private network of servers located outside Vietnam.

Because of the power of VPNs, some VPNs are blocked in Vietnam. Though internet censorship is not as serious as China, there are some forces at work trying to control the flow of information in and out of Vietnam! VPN services for Vietnam do exist though, and using a VPN connection in Vietnam virtually transports your entire phone's or computer's connection outside the country.

One disadvantage of VPNs is that they must be installed to work. This can make it inconvenient to use at work, school, or on public computers. If you are working on a device that you can't install your own software on, professional web based proxies are a better solution.

More Stuff

Remember that when you use a VPN or proxy, your computer or phone will change IP address. This means that you'll be able to access foreign websites that block your Vietnamese IP address. Hulu and Netflix require a US IP address to get access to their streaming content. BBC iPlayer requires a UK IP. There are hundreds of websites around the world that are "Geo-Restricted". These sites can be unblocked by changing your IP. If you want to unblock streaming or download sites, a VPN connection will do a better job of this because they get past more filters. Also, VPNs allow you to choose the country of your IP address, while many web based proxies do not.
