Proxy Services - What To Avoid And What To Look For

Unfortunately finding a reliable proxy service isn't as easy as it sounds. There are a couple things you should be looking for when you decide on a proxy service, and Google isn't always helpful. I recently did some research about proxy sites, and here some of what I found.

Do not search for terms like, "free", "best", or "fast"

When you sign up for one of Google advertising programs, you are able to put Google's ads on your site. Once you're in the network, there's not a lot of regulation that happens about sites you start after the initial initiation process, so people put up 'Adsense' sites - sites that have no content, but have lots of advertisements. With proxies, this is the case.

By choosing a good name for their site like "the-best-proxy' or 'fastestproxyintheworld'(not real sites - invented for the purposes of this article) they get found in Google when you type these terms into the search engine. Bad news for you though, there's nothing on the site but advertisements. Even if you through them a bone, and click on one of the adverts (which are bound to be proxy related), chances are, the site you'll end up on will be the same thing - no content, no proxy, no use.

Use a reputable service, probably with a paid option available

Free stuff isn't that great. There's a cartoon I saw once of two pigs going into a slaughterhouse, and one pig says to the other, "Look at all this free food!". The saying goes, if you're not paying for, then you're being sold. Free proxies are a security risk because you don't really know the motives of the person running the proxy. Sure, there's a chance that it's just a hobby of theirs, or that they are part of a supportive proxy network. But there's also a chance that there's a malicious user behind the mask of the proxy server, and they're using the hook of 'free' to catch a few unsuspecting fish.

As least with a company that offers a paid service you can see the hook, line, and sinker. Yes, we know you want us to sign up. Yes, we can see that advertisement. Yes, we'll allow you to send us promotional emails. With a business to run, they've got something to lose (You), so they're probably going to keep their servers better maintained, and be less likely to abuse your private data.

Conclusion

If you follow these two tips, a great proxy service may be just right around the corner. If you're trying to save some cash, there are some free services available, but if you want reliability and security, the a paid proxy service is going to be most suitable for you.
