Smartphones Have Become A Necessary Luxury

When I was younger, nobody I knew ever had a cellphone of any kind. If you wanted to call someone, you had to use a landline, which usually consisted of a house phone or a pay phone. Back in those days it seemed like we got along just fine without the use of cell phones. I mean, I'm still alive, right?

Fast forward to my high school days in the mid 2000's, and it seemed like most people had a regular cell phone. My family has always been behind on technology, so of course they never jumped on upgrading to the latest technology which was using a portable phone. Pay phones were starting to become more and more scarce. Since I didn't drive during most of my high school experience, I relied on my parents picking me up after I got done with school and practice. They often didn't know exactly what time to pick me up, so I had to call them to let them know.

At my school, they became more and more stingy with allowing students to use the landline they had to call someone. I don't know what the reasoning behind this was, but they became jerks about it and kept telling me to get a cell phone, as if it was that easy.

Nowadays, my family and I all have cell phones, but not one of us has a smartphone. It's crazy because I often have people sending me stuff that can only be accessed with a smartphone, and they are dumbfounded when I tell them I can't receive any of that stuff because of the limitations of my regular phone. "Dude, you need an iphone or Droid man, you got to upgrade!", they tell me. Yeah, okay, it would be nice but I'm stuck until my contract runs out.

Even in college, professors are encouraging people to use their smartphones to look up certain websites while in class. Of course, it seems like I'm the only dummy without one, and people always look at me funny when I tell them I only have a regular cell phone. It's crazy though how expensive it is just to purchase an iphone or droid and then get the data package, yet everyone seems to have one.

My parents have always taught me that having a cell phone is a luxury item that's not needed, but it's becoming clear to me that having not just a cell phone, but a smart phone is becoming more and more necessary in today's society. We use it in many different ways to make our lives easier, and it seems like the fast increase in technology is making it more necessary for us to be connected. Not having a smart phone has made me feel out of the loop, but one day I will finally upgrade, hopefully soon.

Me and my other half was discussing this the other day, I remembered my mother using a 15m long phonecord for the landline so that she could walk around whilst being on the blower. My other half is a master softwear engineer and he creates smartphones and either him or I would do with out our phones, we love them, I love to walk around with a world of knowledge in my pocet so to speak. Last year when my oldes was ten they had to start using their smartphones in school so that they will learn how to search the net for answer, see the difference between good and bad information etc. My boy is a true wiki fan :)

Wow your oldest child has a smart phone and I don't? I REALLY feel left out now LOL!! But yeah smart phones are amazing and I wish I could have one. It's crazy how expensive they are yet seemingly everyone has one even if they are low-income. Soon, though...

Over here you sign up for a 1-2 year contract with one of the many companys that has the mobile net. I pay for instance 40 usd every month and for that I get to pick any phone I want, I have 1000 free sms, free net and I get to call for the monthly cost. My kids have smaller smart phones and they cost 10 dollars a month with free internet, they call me for free, they have a certain amount of free sms and free calls to that operator :) I've been on my contract for 2 years now and they have just sent me an offer to go in and pick up any phone that I want as long as I stay with them, if I don't want a phone a will instead get monthly reductions on my phonebill :).

I worked for a major wireless provider until I retired. I never even used a cellphone until I started with them. I gave my husband a phone also, which he never used until his dad got critically ill. I did tech support for advanced devices. My hubby and I now use the iPhone, and neither of us want to go without. For my business, it is critical. While my hubby never talks on the phone, he uses it for texting and the browser. He is a fanatic about checking our online bank account. I have tried many makes and models, and really see how they are changing lives. Many of the elderly have given up landlines (we have done this too) and just use cell phones. Some day, I think all phones will be wireless.

Yeah I really need to upgrade. It's becoming more and more of a need nowadays. I remember getting lost in San Diego and I asked someone for directions and you know what they did? They whipped out their smart phone to help me out. LOL.

It is amazing that you survived high school without a cell phone. I hate my phone but recognize it is a necessary evil. Like a growing number of people, I don't have a land line. I haven't had one for about 15 years. I traveled between two homes and the cell phone was actually a less expensive option than a line at each house. Years ago, having a cell phone was an expensive option and only people with a lot of money had them. Now they are relatively cheap and if you don't have a cell, people look at you as if your were from another planet. I recently read an article that said the next outward sign of success and affluence is NOT being able to be reached at any point in time. I turned off my cell phone for two months this summer (no school). I actually have lost friends because of this action. I had a great time however and got so much more done.

Yeah cell phones are so distracting! And it's sad when I walk around and people are just totally immersed in their cell phones. It's like they would rather text people or be on facebook than talk to others face to face.

I have actually been to a dinner party at a restaurant and looked around the table. Everyone was on their phones texting - and some of them were communicating to people at our table. How messed up is that?
