Surf Blocked Sites

The use of proxies and VPNs has become very prevalent for protecting your online identity and preventing data theft. However, many people use these services for another purpose. This is the ability to surf blocked sites. There are many parts of the world where websites are censored, for a wide range of reasons. Often this censorship is for political reasons, such as protecting citizens, or preventing any rebellions from occurring.

One of the reasons behind the development of the internet was the freedom that it provides. Physical media is subject to a large range of censorship, and it is often difficult for people to get access to books, pamphlets or magazines that are banned in their country. It was believed that providing material in an online environment would get around this problem, because governments would not have any control over the information that people have access to.

However, the concept of the internet as a borderless means of sharing information has not been realized. Instead, governments have been able to control the content that people are able to access by the use of censorship. This means that within certain countries, websites are unable to be accessed. For example, China is well known for having prevalent censorship, and people in mainland China cannot visit many websites, including most websites that are associated with social networking.

Censorship is probably the most significant form of site blocking, but it is not the only way in which it occurs. A second form of restriction is filtering. This refers to the way that the owner of a particular network may have specific web pages blocked. An example of this is the way that school networks often block social networking sites, as well as those that are thought to promote violence or to be a bad influence.

Finally, some websites are subject to regional restrictions. This is different from censorship, because it is done by the particular website, rather than by governments or internet service providers. Often, regional restrictions are the result of copyright, and this is why that copyright legislation is being developed in many western countries. These laws may mean little more than censorship, and they have been fought strongly by advocates of free media.

This is why many people are turning to VPNs and proxies to allow them to surf blocked sites. These services are very effective at getting around restrictions that are in place currently and also ones that will be developed in the future.
