Surf Blocked Sites - What's The Best Way?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Freedom of the internet isn't prevalent everywhere. Chances are that you've been somewhere and discovered that the website you want to check out was blocked. For me, it was Facebook in China. You might want to unblock Netflix or Hulu when you're outside The US (or BBC iPlayer when you're outside The UK). IT might be that your boss has blocked Twitter and you really, really need to Tweet something.

Maybe some research sites have been blocked in the library because of the kind of content your research paper is about. Maybe your wife has blocked your favorite video streaming sits (yeah, those kind). Whatever the reason, whatever the place, and regardless of whether you're using a phone, laptop, or desktop, you can install software to surf blocked sites.

Still worse, it may be that your government has blocked sites. And what do you do when they start blocking the sites that unblock other sites? How can you bypass internet censorship laws and firewalls when they're blocking the tools you need to bypass them?

Ok, lets start with the easy stuff.

Proxies are a popular way to surf blocked sites. Actually, you may surprised to find out that the internet browser you're using right now was build to use alternate proxies. Somewhere in the custom settings of Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Opera are manual proxy settings for proxies. You just need a proxy IP address and port number.

But to be honest, it's kind of a pain to scour the internet for proxies that will allow you to borrow their IP address for a few hours. They're out there, but you've got to look. Even then, you should be wondering why some guy would let you use his proxy for free. The security risks involved with this kind of proxies are well known.

So you can sign up for a proxy service. This would give you access to premium, private, and speedy proxy servers. This is great for unblocking sites websites at work, school, and home.

Virtual private networks can do more than allow you to surf blocked sites though. With a VPN, your entire device uses an alternate IP address. This means that any type of gaming, chatting, or VOIP will also be anonymous. This is what people in China, Vietnam, Iran, and Egypt use to block government access to their private data, and gain access to foreign media.

So which method is the best? None really - it's going to depend on your needs. If you only infrequently need to unblock sites on devices you don't own, go ahead and use the free open proxies I mentioned. If you frequently need this kind of service for browsing and streaming only, then a proxy service is a good idea. If you travel a lot and worry about your privacy online, the a VPN is your best tool
