Watching Netflix overseas isn't really that big of a challenge. Unlike Hulu, they don't really seem to keep strict tabs on who uses IP changing tools to access their site. However, there are a few details you should be aware of before you go "gung-ho", "willie-nillie", or "balls-to-the-wall".
1. Netflix doesn't allow proxies to access their site. Even though there are a lot of blog posts still kicking around from 2009 when Hotspot Shield was in its heyday, proxies like this just don't work anymore. The lack of security and general ease of detectibility of proxies (probably because of the way they assign IP addresses), means that sites like Hulu, Netflix, and Pandora are able to block uses from getting access to Netflix overseas effectively.
2. Virtual private networks do work. There are some users out there that like to make posts about VPNs not working anymore, however, they do. Of course, I haven't tried all of them, but I have tried several VPN services to stream Netflix overseas, and all of them have worked without a problem. These users probably have their own advertising agenda and should be ignored.
3. Be careful of bandwidth caps. Some VPN services may put a limit on how much you can upload or download or stream. Most don't these days, but some do. Watch out for it, because streaming one or two movies every day will eat up your bandwidth like a fat kid alone with a birthday cake.
4. Make sure your VPN service has servers in The USA. Most do, because American IP addresses are one of the most popular in the world (probably because of all the cool, but restricted content we have available in The US. Aside from everything else, having servers in The US, and therefore having an American address is essential to being able to watch Netflix overseas
5. Get something with a money back guarantee. Some VPN services don't live up to their advertisements, and it's a real PITA to have to wait for your Netflix movie to load. If you're unhappy with the speed of the VPN, first contact their support team to see if they have any suggestions. If not, maybe try something else. If you try a couple and are still having issues, it may be your Internet connection speed. Some say that PPTP is the fastest VPN, but it is also the least secure. This may or many not be a concern to you. Consulting a representative of the VPN service about your intentions to watch Netflix overseas is a good idea, as they can point you in the right direction.
Watching Netflix overseas will not be a problem. Unlike Hulu, which seems to be on a mission to block us non-US users out (how many times to I have to clear my cookies and cache a week?), Netflix has never been a problem.
One last tip, when you stream movies online with Netflix though a VPN, another trick to get your full bandwidth and speed potential, is to first sign into Netflix and start your movie with the VPN. Then sign out of the VPN server. Your movie will continue to play at your full bandwidth capabilities, and will not kick you out of the movie even if it pauses to load.
