Using A Private IP Address - Guide To Being Anonymous Online

I don't have to tell you that we're moving our lives onto the internet. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. More than anything, most people underestimate just how much information about them is online, and the more random stuff you sign up for, sites you visit, email addresses you use, communities you join, and comments you make, the more easily an online profile of you is created. Sometimes you can choose what's known about you, and sometimes you can't, and for some people that's unnerving. Part of maintaining an anonymous profile on the internet is using a private IP address. Here are some key steps to keeping your online identity anonymous.

1. Sign out of all accounts

So you've got a Facebook account, a Twitter account, a Pinterest account, and a Gmail account. You're a member of Flikr, Google +1, Stumble Upon, and you've got a Wordpress blog. Can you even keep track of all those services you've sign up for over the years? Well, you've probably left a trail, and now that there's an effort to connect everything (usually to Facebook and Twitter), signing into one account may mean that you've signed into several simultaneously. Different sites have different private policies, and I'll be that you're never quite sure what they are. Usually these things will time out after a couple weeks if you don't sign in, but to be sure you can double check what you Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail accounts are linked to. If you're looking for anonymity online, be sure to sign out of these big three before browsing.

2. Clear you cookies and block browser cookies

Cookies can be used to track your browsing activity, even when you're not on the site that place them on your computer! Though they're not exactly viruses, some cookies are considered malware. The information they can tell a malicious user can lead to hacking of your account. Your browser cache will fit into this category as well. Though these things can be used to help your internet browsing experience run more smoothly, they're a definite NO when it comes to being anonymous online. Cookies are used to recognize you, and if you want to be anonymous, then you've got to get rid of them.

Browsers will vary, but each one will have a way to clear the cookies, cache, and internet history, as well as block these settings for future usage. Do this, then restart your browser.

3. Use a private IP address

You can use a private IP address from a virtual private network. The IP address of your computer can be used not only to identify you physical location, but also as a starting point to creating an online profile of you. It can be used to hijack your internet session, or find out about what sites you visit and what you download.

Using a private IP from a virtual private network not only hides your real IP address, but it also encrypts the data that you send over the internet. This prevents third party users and organizations from passively eavesdropping as well as actively hacking into your computer or phone. These services usually come with a monthly fee for customers service and server maintenance, but they're key to keeping your identity anonymous while you are connected to the internet.
