Vpn Dedicated Ip - More Or Less Private Than A Dynamic Ip?

When signing up for a VPN service, you may have to choose between a dedicated IP and a static IP. Most of the time the choice will be automatic, but you still may be wondering what the difference is, and which one is more private. Here's a breakdown of what's going on.

Usually, when you sign up for a VPN service, the standard VPN service will provide you with a dynamic IP address. This means that every time you sign into the VPN, you get a different IP. Each VPN service's policies will differ.

For example, some VPN services will assign you an IP address until you actively change your IP by changing servers. Some VPN services will automatically change your IP each time you sign in and out of the same server. Some VPN services will change your IP automatically through your private surfing session. If this is a concern of yours, be sure to clarify these points before you sign up because not all services are the same, and not all explicitly state this information.

The point is that you are part of a group of anonymous surfers, and you use IP addresses as part of a community - today it's mine, tomorrow its yours type thing.

When you use a VPN dedicate IP address, there is one IP address, and it is assigned to you. It is not your real IP address, and it cannot be used to trace your real IP address. It is still an anonymous IP address provided by the VPN, but it's it not shared with other uses in the community.

So which one is more private?

While you might think that having a dedicated IP is more private, it might not be. This is going to depend on your definition of 'private'.

Private, in the sense of being the opposite of 'public', is going to mean that a dedicated IP is more private than a dynamic IP. It's yours, and yours alone. There is no chance for other users to abuse your IP. This is good for gamers who want to change IP address, but don't necessarily want the anonymity of having a constantly changing IP. It's like having a new identity.

But private in the sense of being 'anonymous' means that dynamic IP is more private. If you change your virtual identity each time you log in, it becomes harder to trace you, or profile you as an internet user. For example, if you sign into the same site every day with the same IP (even if its a VPN IP address), the website will begin to identify you as a user, and while it may not know your real IP, it may be able to read other things on your computer like cookies, cache, or other footprints you've left online (are you still signed into your Facebook account?).

But by changing your identity constantly, it becomes harder to target an identify you, thus making your more anonymous.

A VPN dedicated IP, because of it's exclusivity is probably going to cost you a few more dollars a month. Most users who are looking to be 'anonymous' can just go with a standard package provided by the VPN service and won't have to worry about anything.. Other users looking to sustain long term activity online with a secure IP may want to consider a dedicated IP. This may include gamers, businesses, or members of overseas online communities.
