Vpn Protocols Youll Need To Get A Us Ip Address On Mac Os/x, Windows, Ios, And Android

One of the biggest pains about choosing a VPN to get a US IP address is deciding which VPN protocol to choose.  After years of dealing with this stuff, I can rattle off facts like there's nothing to it, but I remember that as a beginner I felt that I was in over my head.  There are actually some pretty simple rules to follow, but the thing to remember is that many services these days provide an "all in one" package deal that means you get all VPN protocols in one package and can change later on if your first choice ended up being the wrong one.  If you get the wrong protocol, most services will allow you to upgrade or switch without a problem.

Lets start with smart phone users who want to get a US IP address on iOS and Android operating systems.  There are certain limitations on phones that only allow certain VPN protocols, so it will be easier to analyze.  To get a US IP address iOS and Android systems, you can basically choose between PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec protocols.  Most of the time however, you'll see PPTP and L2TP advertised.  IPSec actually refers to a few different things, so for now, you don't need to worry so much about it. You may occasionally see L2TP/IPSec as a choice.

PPTP is probably the oldest VPN protocol, and therefore the least secure. L2TP is an improvement on this VPN protocol.  As you can imagine, the simpler the security, the faster the connections will be, but the more susceptible to spying and hacking you'll be.  It's going to depend on what you're using the VPN for, which VPN will be better for your activity.  Many people tend to go for PPTP because is cheaper and faster, but most VPN services will recommend L2TP for the security.  It is possible to use other VPN protocols.

To get a US IP address on Mac OS/X and Windows operating systems, the above rules remain true. However, in addition to this, you'll have a few more choices.  One of these is called OpenVPN, and will work for most laptop/desktop operating systems. In combination with SSL security (the same kind used for online shopping), it is one of the strongest forms of online security you can use to surf anonymously.  Most VPN services will offer this, and for users in countries that censor the Internet, businesses, or people looking for completely un crackable anonymity while they surf the Internet, this is the one for you.

There is another VPN protocol put out by Cisco called "AnyConnect" and one from Microsoft called SSTP.  Unless you know that you're looking for Cisco's AnyConnect, it's not something you need to worry about, as the above mentioned VPN protocols will be sufficient to get you a US IP address for most any purpose.  SSTP, because it was release only recently by Microsoft, is only going to work with Windows Vista and Win 7 operating systems.  It also uses SSL encryption, making  it a very secure choice.  However, not all services offer it, and although you may avoid some hassle with setup in the beginning, there's not much difference in performance from OpenVPN, so it's by no means required that you use SSTP if you are running Vista or Win 7.
