Where You Need A Private Ip Address

Most people don't think twice about connecting to the internet with their real IP address. In fact, most people don't even know what an IP address is. The truth is that most of the time it's not that important - MOST of the time. There are some situation where you definitely don't want to use your own IP to surf the net and a private IP address can save your skin.

Public Wifi

Perhaps the situation which most people can benefit from a private, or anonymous IP is on public wifi. This could be when you surf the net at your local cafe with your own laptop or phone, or at a hotel/airport on a business trip or vacation. It means that more than one person is connected to the same network. Most likely, you aren't going to know the other people on the network. If you're using school or work wifi, you might be a bit more familiar with the people connected, but remember, other users outside your office or school can probably connect as well.

The danger here, is that sharing a network with other people means that they can monitor and intercept your traffic. There are things called "packet sniffers". This kind of software can be used to not only monitor all traffic over a network, but also can be tuned to seek out specific type of information. This is not an illegal tool - it can actually be used to improve network speed and stability as it seeks out malicious software and other malfunctions that may occur. However, as in the case of public wifi, it can also be use to hijack your information without you knowing.

Worse still, because it's "passive", and just watches and collects, your spyware and antivirus software probably won't catch it. Even if you don't care who's watching what you're doing, you will care if they steal you passwords. You will care if they get you credit card info when you purchase an app or go shopping online. Matched up with your email address, and whatever data is contained in your email inbox, they could potentially do a lot of damage.

Firewalls restrict more of the internet than you know. Every computer, website, ISP, and even entire countries have a firewall in an attempt to prevent spam and stop malicious software. These firewalls can also block you from accessing parts of the internet. It could be that your home firewall is preventing you from opening up foreign websites because that country has a bad rep for spam. It could be that your work firewall is stopping you from checking your Facebook account. If you live somewhere like China or Vietnam, the country firewall could be blocking Wikipedia and world news sites. Even in places like The US, New Zealand, and The UK, your ISP may be blocking P2P software sites.

A private IP address can get you past these firewalls. For one, a private IP will make your actual IP invisible. Also, it will allow you to change your IP address to any other country in the world. If you use a VPN service to change your IP address, as long as the service has servers located in a country, you can get an IP from there. Some popular locations are The US, The UK, Germany, and The Netherlands, but some services have servers in Asia, Australia, South America, and other European countries.
