Wifi Security for Windows

Whether you're on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 you can get some wifi security to protect yourself from eavesdropping and hacking on shared networks. It's not difficult to install or get set up, and once it's running, you don't have to think about it.

Virtual private networks are used for quite a few things, not just wifi security. They're used by educational institutions and businesses to send and receive information from remote locations to local servers. The secure tunneling and encryption provides a safe, hidden path for the information to travel.

This same software can be used to acquire the IP address of other countries and access websites that have blocked outside IP addresses. Many membership, TV/movie streaming, and spam sensitive websites may block entire IP ranges from certain (or all) countries.

It's the IP changing feature of VPNs that allow us to use the shared network connection, but use a private IP that won't be susceptible to eavesdropping while connected. It's the encryption and tunneling that provides a safe path for our information while it travels to and from the VPN server (we're the remote device, and the VPN sever is the 'local' network).

VPNs, in the case that you're using wifi, won't need any extra hardware. There are things called VPN routers which can be bought and used to provide a VPN connection for a home office or home network, but those don't concern us now. We're on shared wifi, and we want to hide our IP. How do we do it?

First, you'll need to choose a VPN service. There are many good ones, but do your homework because many VPN review sites base their reviews on how much of a commission they receive, so not all reviews are 100% honest. Honest VPN reviews tend to point out the good and bad for each service, and may give details about personal experiences. Fake, or 'cookie cutter' reviews are very generalized and uninformative. Use your best judgement.

Some cool features to look out for are VPN server locations and unlimited server switching. From whatever country you're in right now, you can switch from your local country's IP to a foreign country if you like. That may not be necessary, or you may find that you can access more sites than before. You can also keep your eye out for unlimited bandwidth and money back guarantees.

For the best security VPN, you should use OpenVPN. This is a type of VPN, not a brand. It's the type of tunnel, and it uses SSL encryption which is the standard stuff that protects us when we shop online. OpenVPN/SSL is found at most VPN services. Other options for Windows are PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP. PPTP and L2TP are not as secure as SSTP and OpenVPN. Actually, SSTP is from Microsoft, and a good idea too. I mentioned OpenVPN because it's more widely available, and SSTP only works with Vista or Win 7, so OpenVPN is more versatile.
