Dealing With Jealousy – Unhealthy For A Relationship

Dealing with jealousy is something that has to be done for a relationship to be healthy in the long term. Some people feel a dash of jealousy here and there adds some spice to a relationship. This may be, but true jealousy, unleashed is a very destructive emotion. If jealousy has planted itself between you and your partner, you have take steps right away to get rid of it.

What you do to deal with it will depend on if it’s you or your partner who has the jealousy issue. The only person you can change, of course, is yourself. There are things you can do to help your partner get over their jealousy. First, though, let’s see what steps you can take to get rid of your jealousy.

Before you can fix anything, you have to get down to the core cause of your jealous feelings. In most cases, it comes about because of insecurities you have about yourself. There can be other causes, though, so look deep and root them out. Finding the root cause or causes is the only way of dealing with jealousy.

Once you have the cause of the jealousy figured out you can work on fixing it. For example, if you are insecure, find ways of making yourself feel more secure. Why is all this so important? Because jealousy is really just a symptom of an underlying problem. Until we get rid of the underlying problem, the jealousy will just keep coming back.

How do you identify what the root causes are? Start paying close attention to what triggers your jealousy. For example, if you feel jealous when you see your partner talking to a member of the opposite sex, you may have a need to feel that you are special. On the other hand, if you feel jealous when your partner isn’t with you, then there’s a good chance that you have trust issues.

What do you do if your partner is the one who needs to deal with jealousy issues?

Make sure that you aren’t doing anything to trigger their jealousy. Some people feel more needed when they make someone else jealous, but this is definitely an unhealthy way to feel validated. You should want your partner to love you unconditionally, but nothing more. To put it another way, being jealous isn’t a sign of love; it’s a sign of dysfunction.

Use caution when dealing with jealousy because it’s usually a sign of much deeper issues. Because of this, you should never give in to any demands that are made to try to control you. Your partner could be using jealousy as a means, whether subconsciously or consciously, to exert control over you.

If you can’t get the jealousy under control on your own, you might think about seeing a counselor. Counselors are great at helping couples with many relationship problems, not just dealing with jealousy in a relationship. Another way to get help is by visiting websites or reading self help books. Whatever way you choose, just know that other couples have conquered jealousy and you can too.
