The Basics Of Relationship Psychology – Understanding Relationships

Relationships can be maddening sometimes. They can be going along great, then suddenly everything turns around and they are extremely difficult. What makes things worse is that the reasons for the good times and the bad times can be difficult to pinpoint. It can be unusually hard to know what will happen in the course of a relationship. How do you explain why couples can seem in love one day and then file for divorce the next? A little relationship psychology can help you better understand.

Does that mean that if your relationship is in trouble you need to see a psychologist? No, not necessarily, but using psychology to look deeper into relationships does bring up some interesting insight. Discovering how people think and what they are thinking may help you in your current or future relationships.

Studies have shown that the majority of 18-21 year old couples tend to avoid becoming deeply intimate with each other and try to remain as independent as they can. They also had concerns about rejection and being abandoned. However, the young people who had a high level of self-esteem had less concerns of rejection and abandonment issues.

What can we draw from this information? Younger people will often break up because they are afraid. Good relationships just naturally form a deep emotional connection and inter-dependence on one another. When relationship problems hit them, the couple doesn’t have the deep connection to one another they need to want to stay together. So the relationship breaks up and they both move on and do it all over again.

Older couples don’t seem to have these issues, generally speaking. Why is that? It could be that they are more secure in who they are. They have also experienced more in life than the younger couples. As people age, they also tie their self-worth less to what other people think of them. Or put more simply, they just have less fear of breaking up. These attitudes seem to make it less likely that they will break up. Not that older couples don’t sometimes split up, break ups can happen to couples of any age.

Men and women also approach communication differently. A woman will try to guide the conversation, while a man tends to react to the conversation as it happens. Can you see how this could lead to conflict? The woman starts the conversation in the hopes that her man will give her feedback on what he’s feeling. The man answers her questions and clams up. As a result of the different communication styles between the sexes, what is said; may not be what the other person hears. This needs to be taken into account in order to avoid misunderstandings.

These are very basic observations on relationship psychology. There are many more. It can be fun to investigate the differences in how men and women think, but that alone won’t keep your relationship headed down the right path. The major things that will keep people together are some love, hard work, and a lot of commitment.

Keep this information in mind for the next time you feel your relationship could be going better. It’s a good place to start. If you feel you can’t work out the problems yourselves, you might consider counseling. Counselors have a good understanding of relationship psychology and can help you become a happier couple.
