Game Platform Of The Future

You may be wondering what a gardener knows about game consoles. Considering that a gardener, as opposed to a farmer, design their farms for optimal output from minimal input, thus leaving them with quite some free time for high tech recreation. So, lets get into it.

If you are middle aged and still love playing high tech video games, you are probably wondering, if you have not tried it, how the Xbox Kinect adds value to the gaming experience. If you are like me, you probably aren’t very hyped about it.

Here is how I look at it. The Kinect brings with it some crazy advances. It must be pretty cool playing the new Need For Speed while seated on your couch, steering using a virtual steering wheel, pedals and gear lever. Almost as exciting as playing Medal Of Honor while standing in your living room, holding up a virtual gun and using the palm of your hand as the trigger. The exercise alone gives the Kinect a few points over any other type of game controller.

Now, lets think back, way back, back to the ages of the first Sony Play Station that came with the vibrating game pad. Do you remember the excitement when you literally felt the wrath of Liu Kang’s bicycle kick in Mortal Kombat, or the feel of the concrete wall on your rear bumper during a drift gone wrong in NFS Underground. The Kinect can never compare to the feel of your heartbeat in your hands after you get attacked in Silent Hill. Do you remember the fear you felt stumbling your limping character along a dark, foggy alley, his heart beating in your hands and the pulse sounding in sync over the speakers as you tried to light your way with a dim torch, with the flapping of some grotesque flying creature’s wings sounds somewhere in the background, faint at first, then gets louder? Kinect cannot offer that level of emotional stimulation.

A while back a few of us Kenyan video game enthusiasts got found ourselves having the same discussion. An interesting turn in the conversation came along when I asked,”Where do you guys think thechnology should take us next in regards to gaming?” After a couple of minutes of discussions on how developing technology should be harnessed my console manufacturers, we found ourselves longing to forward time to be able to sample technologies of the future sooner. In the next paragraph I will describe the ultimate game console of the future. As you read, keep in mind that all the I am about to describe is very possible in our eyes. All the features are derived from existing technology that is either in use in the open market or it in its development stages.

The console of the future will be a platform placed in the middle of an empty room. The console will be made of nano bots and a series of miniature projectors. When the console switches on it forms itself into the home room. This home room is customizable into simple structures such as a table and chair or a Lazyboy couch and a hovering screen. Here you access your console menu and go through menu items by using gestures, as in the Kinect.

You choose your game: Metal Gear Solid. You go through the menu and start the mission. In front of you forms a table made of nano bots. Guns appear on the table one at a time and you swipe across the bottom of the table to view the next weapon.

You choose your weapon: M16 Assault Rifle. Since the gun is made from nano bots, you can pick it up, disassemble it, customize, check ammo and reassemble it before or during a mission.

Done with customization? You start the mission. The console projects the game environment on the four walls, ceiling and floor of the room. You move around but the platform keeps moving accordingly to keep you in the middle of the room. Just like an exercise treadmill. The only difference is that it moves you in all directions. When you move so does the environments so you seem to be walking. When you fire your weapon, it is no different from the real thing. Every thing from texture of the gun to the recoil and empty shells are identical to the real gun.

All in all, it would be a combination of past, present and future technology to get the best video gaming experience. Google "Claytronics" if you think this kind of technology is light years away.

Have an entertaining and innovative day.

Merv The Gardener.
