Now I know it has been a while since I have written anything.. and I will say it's my fault a little bit. I been slacking and haven't been quite focused like I should be. Less on that, I was hanging around on Xbox live and I went to go see if they have dropped any new demos as of late. Spec Ops: The Line was available for download so I decided to give it a try. Now note, I have been on and off following this game...but after playing the demo, I'm leaning over to purchasing it a bit more now.
The Demo starts you off with a little cut scene of how you came to arrive at Dubai (The area in which a nice sum of your time in) under the eyes of Martin Walker and his other 2 comrades. While it is still unclear what their particular roles are apart from backing Walker up, still they seem to hold up quite nicely in combat. As far as the story goes, you are in search of John Konrad while also trying to make some kind of understanding of the recurrence of sandstorms in Dubai. Trust me when I first heard of it sounded a bit stale, but as said, the Demo did a great job of displaying and executing their idea.
I was HIGHLY impressed with the use of dialogue, feeling what they were saying was bring life to the character and the environment around them. At one point, one of my comrades was saying something like "Shot gunner out in the open trying to be a hero!!". I couldn't help but laugh at it and yet left a good impression as time went on. It's not often that I say a current gen game's dialogue is really well done, and Spec Ops is really fitting the bill. There was another instance in the 2nd half of the demo where the enemies were having a small conversation with each other while guarding the stairs. One soldier was asking for a stick of gum while the other simply wanted to take a rest. Of course I had to plant a bullet in each of their heads, but what they said before hand simply had me amazed. This does have the makings to contend with Call of Duty's way of storytelling in my humble opinion.
As far as gameplay goes, It felt smooth enough to play through, but were a few problems that I noticed. In one instance you are descending from a building using a grapple hook. Sounds like there is nothing wrong with that but it felt so..forced. I don't know, it should of felt natural but didn't. Another thing that I picked up on was the cover system (just getting into the cover position) felt a bit...unresponsive at times. As many first and third person shooters I have played, I can always makeshift any piece of the environment as cover..but still...something small but needs to be fixed.
My overall Opinion on Spec Ops: The line
Basically the demo was presented very well, and pushed me closer to purchasing the game. Now will I have money before it's release? Who knows, money is still funny these days. But do I encourage others to try the demo out before you buy it? Yes I do. It has been a while since I have literally been impressed with a Shooter's storytelling. Hopefully I will give you guys a review on it (assuming I am able to obtain a copy).
