Can You Study For The BLS Online?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

It is possible to study the theory element of the basic life support certification online but the better organizations will expect you to prove that your understand the theory and can put it into practice before they will award your certification. You can find out more via the American Heart Association center near to your home. They will be able to tell you when they are holding the next skills assessment day so that you can get prepared.

  • What do I need to know before attending class?

You don't need any prior knowledge before you start a basic life support class. If you decide to take the online class you simply go to the American Heart Association website and buy access to the course. Once you feel you are ready to take the test, you can sit it online. When you pass, you can then book your skills training and assessment at your local AHA center.

  • What material is covered at a BLS class?

Obviously you will learn how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation on children and adults. Some classes will also provide specific training for infant CPR so if you have a young baby or are expecting one, you might like to check that this skill is covered. You will also learn how to deal with someone choking from removing the object to clearing the airway and giving rescue breaths if necessary. Adults often suffer an involuntary muscle spasm which prevents them from dislodging the object causing the obstruction themselves which is why you need to learn these skills. Someone who loses consciousness due to choking is suffering from oxygen deprivation and needs rescue breaths more urgently than chest compressions.

You will learn how to treat a suspected head trauma as you can easily cause more damage if someone has broken their neck or damaged their spinal cord. You may have heard of people killing an accident victim because they removed their helmet at the scene of the accident.

  • Remember attending a BLS class doesn't turn you into a medic

Although gaining your BLS is an achievement it doesn't turn you into a medical expert. Always make sure anyone you have helped gets proper medical attention even if they appear to be fine. People can die from drowning hours after the incident happened as there can be water and air trapped in the lungs. People who have choked need to be checked out thoroughly as well especially if they lost conciousness.

  • How long does BLS certification last for?

Just like CPR certification , most basic life support certifications will last for at least two years but don’t leave it til then to refresh your training. Studying the course materials at regular intervals will help to prevent you forgetting the skills you took the time to learn.
