Education Evolution

In this article, I want to focus on transformations in learning particularly Adult and the new trend commonly referred to as MOOC which stands for Massive Open Online Courses and the effect of this.

It is a medium where people gather online to learn with other people all over the world, being introduced more by universities now but the idea has been around for years. I remember my involvement with this mode of learning some years ago, it was mainly text based.

Recently I have done two courses with another major player in this field and this was more interactive and video based. Courses can be taken at own pace. Certificates are issued for a sometimes for a fee although this is not mandatory.

Today due to the advancement of technology, other modes of communication are being incorporated. MOOC will change how education is delivered just as technology changed photography.

Attendance is not monitored so learners can join in and drop off when they like. One course I recently viewed had 45000 enrollments. I recently also signed for a course which has so far attracted 50000 enrollments. It is not uncommon to hear of several thousands more enrollments.

Only a fraction of these would have been consistent throughout and finished the course. Nevertheless many would have had a taste of knowledge they never had before, which can only be a good thing.

The benefits of this mode of learning are enormous:

  • Many people who would never venture into an institution can access education in the comfort of their homes. This can lead to desire for more learning.

  • Institutions are able to create more courses as teachers are able to impact knowledge to thousands of people at a time and not just to a few learners.

  • Once the course is set up, it can be offered numerous times. Video of lessons can also be accessible to other learners who never participated in the learning in the first place.

  • This form of learning can offer great networking opportunities as there are participants from all over the world.

  • Employers are now· beginning to take notice of MOOC on CV's just like they do with voluntary jobs.

There are a number of concerns:

  • Funding for MOOC can be initially high and could mean that only big institutions can take advantage of these.

  • Completion rates are low but this can change depending on how the tutor can engage the learners.

  • Educational professionals are fearful of this mode of delivery and it could mean replacement of lecturers by technology.

  • Educators would have to be re-trained to deliver the new mode of learning.

  • no formal certification could mean less commitment by learners.

Whichever way we look at this, this trend is here to stay and the changes would be great indeed. There are currently more and more players entering the industry and it can only mean one thing, massive changes are about to hit the Education industry and I think it is all for the best!

Street Talk

This is very interesting and hope this trend also becomes inclusive to those in so called third world countries who are so keen to learn and study without the means available in the developed countries and yet people in he developed countries are the least interested in learning.

It's interesting you should mention that. A university in Africa turned away about 30000 students recently. This is after it had taken 20000+ in campus and about 5000 through distance learning. DS means learning from home with course materials. Internet access and electricity are some of the challenges that would prevent MOOC for now.

Thanks Betcha What we are doing on Wealthy Affiliates is actually an example of this but other players like ALISON, UDEMY, CANVAS etc are providing platforms where you can create courses that enables people to learn from all over the world.

That's right! How I wish that a lot more folks will find their way to WA as we did. Collaboration with people around the globe brings about learning. I believe that the trend of education is moving towards multimodal, multi-literacies where technology is well used through the many platforms online. Thanks for sharing, Kavinah.

This is a very interesting topic, Kavinah. We've been talking about the different technologies we can integrate in the classrooms as we are faced with the challenges of teaching the 21st century students. MOOC is widely promoted by the eSchool News. It's great to be going with the trend in this sense. Thanks for sharing.

As technology is developing so rapidly, our education system is also moving towards the direction of multimodal multi-literacies where having an online collaboration with people around the globe has become a trend. Learning is no longer confined within the four walls of any classroom but rather it goes beyond where the Internet can make a connection to the ends of the earth.
