Many college students realize that the major they have chosen doesn’t suit their talents, abilities, or life goals. In fact, coming to this realization can be a sign of maturity. If you are thinking about changing your major, then read on and find out all of the tips and tricks to making it happen.

Challenges of Changing a Major

The main challenge with changing your major is that you can lose course electives towards your degree that you have already taken. This can be especially true if you are in your junior or senior year. There are other options available to changing your major that you should consider before you take on the expense and time of adding more hours to your degree program.

Alternatives to Changing Your Major

Ask yourself the following questions to see if an alternative option would be more practical than changing your major:

• Could you pursue your new career goal by adding a minor? • Would an internship give you more valuable experience in your field then a change in your major? • Is there another way that you can gain transferable skills to get a job in your career field? • Would it make sense for you to consider a graduate program?

In the world of work you would be surprised to discover that college majors are always not extremely important. It’s the college degree and work experience that tend to help you get a job.

Consider a Related Field Another alternative to completely changing your major is to pick a major that is closely related to your current field. For example, an accounting major who planned on becoming an accountant could make a change to a finance degree. Many of the business courses and accounting courses already taken will work towards a finance degree, thus lessoning the number of total courses required to complete a degree program.

Research Your Potential Major If you already have a potential major in mind, then it is a good idea to take a few classes in that subject area to make sure you like the field and can handle the academics.

Research the Job Market Research the job market to make sure that you will be able to get a job in your field of study upon graduating. The Bureau of Labor Statistics online is an excellent website to get the scoop on long term trends in the job market.

Get Work Experience Through an Internship Instead of changing your major it might be a good idea to consider going to an online school. An online university gives students the opportunity to study at their convenience at home. This allows many students the time to complete internships or work while going to school. With valuable work experience and a college degree graduates have an easier time finding that much needed job upon graduation.

Talk to a Career Counselor and an Academic Advisor A career counselor can help you to make a decision about which college major to pursue. Career aptitude tests are available at universities and colleges to help you ensure that you are making the right decision. In addition, see an academic advisor. An academic advisor can help you to figure out how many hours a change of major will add to your degree program.
