How Full Proof Are Condoms, Really?

America was golden in the 80’s. Hip hop was just starting to really take off and prove to be more than a fad unlike Disco. Michael Jordan began his legendary career. Life was very carefree post “Hippie America”. A nation was coming into it’s own. Everything was progressing and thriving. Then, one day AIDS hit and rocked the world.

This was a new disease that was wreaking both havoc and chaos on everyone. “What was this disease, Where did it come from, How do we protect ourselves”? These were all legitimate questions that people had the right to have answered. This is when condom usage skyrocketed as the top source for protection against STD’s and HIV/AIDS. Safe sex was no longer about preventing unwanted pregnancies. Safe sex became more so about saving your life.

The 80’s baby generation was exposed to the knowledge of this disease and other STD’s pretty early on in life. Condom usage has always been highly suggested. Most of us listen to our doctor’s and commercials when they tell us to, “Wrap it up”. Condoms can and has saved numerous lives in this battle. Whenever we use a condom during sex, we are choosing to armor ourselves in this war against HIV/AIDS and other dangers as well as unwanted problems. My question is, What do you do if you are allergic to latex? What possible hidden dangers do we face utilizing this form of protection?

It is said that approximately 50 percent of people have an allergy to latex. The elastic-like material that comes from the sap of rubber trees is what most condoms are made out of now. It has proven to be quite effective as a defense mechanism against STD’s. However, for some, exposure to Latex has proven to be very irritating and uncomfortable. What do you do when you are allergic to latex and you don’t trust any other methods of safe sex? There are other alternatives. Both Polyurethane and Lambskin condoms are latex free. They are also thinner than the typical latex condom, making sex a little more enjoyable from a sensational standpoint. The only downfall to using Lambskin and Polyurethane are: Polyurethane condoms tend to fit a little loose. You have to be extra careful when taking them off. Lambskins aren’t as effective against STD’s. They have tiny microscopic holes in them. Some STD’s can actually break through. Lambskin’s aren’t ideal for a non-monogamous relationship.

A latex allergy can mirror symptoms of an STD. Symptoms vary from the following: Burning sensation, Rash, itching, and sometimes even fluid filled blisters. If you don’t know any better, You would think a reaction like that is some sort of STD. Don’t get it twisted, go and get tested to make sure that it isn’t an STD, first. When it comes to your sexual health, it is better to be safe than sorry. Latex and Spermicides are what make condom usage a little questionable. Spermicides (nonoxynol-9) is a lubricant packaged in condoms that is designed to kill sperm on contact. Think of it as an insurance policy on condoms. The lubricant doesn’t do anything in STD prevention. Studies are also finding that spermicides also cause yeast infections in women and slightly increases your risk of catching an STD. .

Overall, Condoms do what they were designed to do if they are used correctly. There are no excuses for unwanted pregnancies or any of these health epidemics if people used condoms at the least. Condom technology is constantly evolving. They have condoms designed for better sensations and some that even warm on contact. They even make condoms for the 50 percent of people who are allergic to latex. There is no excuse for non-prevention and safe- guarding your life.
