Anodized Aluminum Cookware - Is it Safe?

Anodized aluminum cookware is a new and very popular alternative to the old Teflon pots and pans of the past. It is non-stick, very durable and resists scratching. However, you may want to know if it is indeed safe to use. In this article I'll discuss what you should know about anodized cookware safety and the best way to care for it.

These days most people are concerned about health issues. Families with children are concerned. People with pets are concerned. We're also concerned about the environment and the long term effects of releasing toxins into the atmosphere..The trend is toward using earth friendly products and having a "green" kitchen.

So, what would make any cookware unsafe? Well, for one thing, when traditional Teflon pans are placed over high heat, the coating releases PFOA fumes into the air. This is why people who use these pans are told not to keep a parakeet (or other bird) in their kitchen. These fumes are deadly to birds! Scary, huh? Also, the Teflon coating will tend to chip and scratch and end up in your food. Even aluminum pans will "leach" out into food and for those who (for health reasons) must limit the amount of aluminum in their diets this is very unhealthy!

For most of us being in the kitchen and cooking on a daily basis is a part of life. Now, many brands of anodized aluminum cookware do have an interior coating of a Teflon type material. However, because these pots and pans are excellent heat conductors, it's not necessary to cook with high temperatures. This eliminates any threat of "fumes" being released. Since the coating is fused onto the anodized aluminum, the surface is very hard and scratch resistant. So, with proper care the flaking off of the "Teflon" shouldn't pose a problem. Because of the chemical process which results in aluminum becoming hard anodized, tests have shown that the amount of aluminum released into food is safe.

How you care for and cook with anodized aluminum cookware will determine how safe it really is. First of all, don't cook over high heat, it's just not necessary. This cookware heats up and cools down very quickly. Even though some brands claim metal utensils can be used, I would stick with plastic or wood. This will cut down on possible scratching over time. Remember this cookware is very durable, but not indestructible.

With the proper care, anodized aluminum cookware is a safe and healthy alternative to the traditional Teflon and aluminum pans of the past. Because of their popularity, there are many brands and prices available on the market today. It's best to do some research. Find out which brands of anodized aluminum cookware are highly rated by other consumers and what features are available. Maybe its time for you to think about replacing your old and worn out pots and pans and to have a kitchen that's healthy and "eco" friendly!
