Cooking at camps has proven impossible for many people. Some tend to overcook/under-cook the food, some simply can't cook without modern cookware while others get really sick after putting their camp cooking skills to test. However, cooking tricks never stop being advanced today, just like these simple but effective camp cooking tricks.
Trust me, getting sick at a camp is the last thing you want
Picture yourself getting stomach sick away from home, or in this case, at a camp. I don't have to give you all the details of how terrible it will be, you can picture the main part of it on your own I guess. The main way you are likely to get sick while at camps is only if you cook wrongly at camps. Basically, to avoid getting sick at a camp you must maintaining perfect hygiene while cooking. There are many ways to do this but here are the main ones you should take note of:
First, you should always use well cleaned dishes, don't re-use utensils before washing them properly.
Secondly, you must have the right food, by this I mean, do not take foods which may give your stomach a hard time to digest. Try aiming for canned foods instead, they work better most of the times.
Lastly, avoid washing your dishes with a lot of soap. Try using warm water with just enough soap.
I have heard cases where people wash their camp cooking utensils with lots of soap and never rinse properly, instead they just put them under the sun to dry! Doing such tings would get you really sick in no time.
Eat right on hot days
Summer, the one time people have all sorts of fun though its as hot as hell. When camping it is recommended to eat right during hot days and you can't eat right if you don't cook right. Science takes the better of this point but don't worry, if you have understood this article this far, you definitely will understand this.
On hot days, your blood is much more active cooling your body, with this happening, it's less likely that your digestion will take place in the right way. If you eat wrongly during hot days, first; you won't get the required nutrients which is required during camps and secondly, you are more likely to get nauseated easily. To overcome this, it is recommended you relax in a shade for some 10minutes before enjoying the meal. Also, you are to drink lots of water to cool your body down.
Camp cooking on cold days
On cold days, you are somewhat advised to do the opposite of what you should do during cold days. The only things you should take into consideration include eating well heated foods, avoid too many cold drinks and obviously, keep warm. Doing this should keep your digestive system just fine.
Defrosting
Many people carry frozen foods from home to camps where they heat them and dig in. Here's the effect to that.
Defrosted foods contain 1500mg of salt, if you have 3 meals of defrosted food that means you probably intake some 4500 mg of salt per day! That's just crazy! Even hikers aren't advised to take such a high amount of salt. A normal person should consume a maximum of 2400mg of salt per day to keep them up. Now its up to you to measure your salt intake.
If you have any sorts of questions to do with camp cooking you are free to ask them, a detailed answer of help will most definitely be given back in no time :) Those are just a few camp cooking tricks that are most likely going to make your camping experience a breeze. More camp cooking tips and tricks are available but I guess that's all from me.
One more thing, do share these ideas using your social networks :)
Happy camp cooking!
Thank you for the tips. I have never had a problem cooking whilst camping. Cooking by a camp fire is actually one of my favorite past times.
When I remember some of the stuff I ate while camping as a kid, it is a wonder I survived. Thanks for the tips.
Alos very useful, in emergency situations. I love in the NW portion of WA state, and we constantly have power outages here, so we have to rely on camp stoves a lot.
one could cook the food at home and freeze it. Then it is your own decision how much salt you want in it
The amount of salt does not increase in frozen foods. That is ridiculous. For the salt in something to increase would require a chemical reaction in the food that converted something in the food to break down in to sodium ions. This just doesn't happen. What ever study you are referring to, either doesn't exist or you are mis-interpreting it.
I didn't know about the sodium levels in frozen/defrosted foods..thanks for the tips!
It has been close to 10 years since I have gone camping, I really miss the way the food taste when you cook it over wood, Yeah I better plan a trip
Yeah my cousins and I used to get once or twice a month, but then one got married the other moved for a job and i become wrapped up in my work, I need to get my family out soon
I have spent many years cooking on camp fires for my self, never once using soap to clean utensils, boil hot water on the fire and you are forever safe. I was once on a trip for 6 and a half months in the middle of no where, baked a bread every day, never cleaned the bread pan, "spray and cook".
