When it comes to cookware, a cast iron Dutch oven is one of the best investments you can make. These durable and versatile will provide plenty of performance, whether you’re cooking at home in the oven or on a camp outing using a fire to cook with. Dutch ovens come in a variety of models and offer different features for various uses. When you want to cook outside over a flame, there are versions that come with legs to extend and hold the oven over the fire. These outdoor versions also usually have a handle to hang it over the flame via a tripod or rope. The indoor varieties typically have larger cooking surfaces and bigger handles for convenience.

Whichever model you choose and wherever you decide to use your cast iron Dutch oven, they are nearly indestructible. You will never have to concern yourself of ruining your oven, as they are rumored to last a lifetime and then some. Other benefits can include ease of use and the fact that they tend to cook food faster than conventional pots. The reason they cook faster is they are designed to keep the heat circulating constantly in the Dutch oven. Even cooking is ensured as well as shorter cook times. Most of the time, they are very easy to clean as well.

Cleaning is always an issue for anyone looking to purchase a cast iron Dutch oven. There are rumors and tales of how hard these ovens are to clean. However, the reality is not so horrible as those fright stories might make them out to be.

The first horror story is that soap and water will ruin your cast iron Dutch oven. This is not true. It is true however, that running your cast iron Dutch oven through the automatic dishwasher will ruin the Dutch oven. Use sponge to scrub out any leftovers, and then make use of soap and water to completely rinse your oven. For best results it is recommended that you clean out the oven right after use and do not let it sit in water soaking. Also do not give food time to get stuck permanently. After use rinse it with warm water and soap immediately.

Most cast iron Dutch ovens from name brand companies such as Lodge are ready to be used as soon as they come out of the box. Using brand new ovens on their first camping trip can be quite the treat. If you are looking to keep your oven working properly, keeping it clean is the best preventative measure you can take. Although usually it is enough to just scrape out the old food, using vegetable oil in your oven can simplify your life immeasurably.

I recommend oiling your new cast iron Dutch oven with vegetable oil as soon as it you get it home from the store. By doing this process, your remains of the last meal cooked in the oven will not have to be scrubbed and scraped from the insides.
